“You will learn your place. Or I can personally show it to you.”

“You’re an Ash Wolf, aren’t you? Of course you are.” My voice is shaky, and I hate that my reaction is so obvious.

He cuts me a dangerous look, and all I can do is stare into those pale blue eyes, the darkness of his long lashes, at just how perfectly handsome this beautiful man is. He has a strong jaw, a perfect nose, and full lips that leave me frightened by the way he makes me feel. I hate that I think he’s anything but a brutal barbarian.

“And if I am?” he asks casually.

“I’ve heard things about your Alpha, and I don’t want to be anywhere near that jerk.” My temper flares at the thought that an Alpha like Dušan thinks he has a right to control everyone’s life.

This man’s gaze pierces into me, and I feel completely vulnerable under his scrutiny. “Really? What sort of things?” he probes, as if he’s never heard the stories.

But I’ll amuse him.

“That he’s worse than the Shadow Monsters. That he kills all females after mating with them, terrified his child will eventually kill him to claim the position of Alpha. That he’s ruthless.”

“Those are severe rumors,” he murmurs.

“Who said they were rumors?” I snap back at him.

His hand squeezes around my wrist, and I startle.

“So you’ve met the Alpha of Ash Wolves firsthand, then?” he asks.

“Well, no. Otherwise, I’d be dead. But I’ve spoken to enough people who tell a similar tale. Haven’t you heard the saying, where there’s smoke, there’s fire?”

There he goes again, laughing, and I narrow my eyes at him.

I straighten my shoulders, trying another tactic, since fists and screaming don’t work. “Please. Can you find it in your heart to release me?”

“I suggest you come and find out the truth for yourself.”

My stomach plunges to my feet, and the reality of him taking me to meet Dušan, Alpha of Ash Wolves, freezes my insides. The danger is real, my fate—sealed.

He hauls me deeper into the forest with long strides. My knees are shaking as I wrack my mind to find an escape.

“You’re a monster.” I snarl, digging my heels into the dirt as he drags me. “And when your Alpha kills me and I’m six feet under, I hope the guilt chews you up for eternity.”

“That’s a long time to feel remorseful. I’m sure I’ll get over it quickly.” He smirks my way, like my survival is a joke.

I look at him with a painful fury that he doesn’t seem to notice. He just rushes me through the woods. Me, the victim. And him, the warrior dragging me to my death.
