Epilogue Two: Jamie

“Baby girl, where are you?”

“Where the hell else would I be?” I grumble under my breath.

He stalks into the room, laughing at my cross look. “Baby, what’s wrong? Didn’t the girls come see you today?”

“Yeah, it’s depressing though. All those women crammed in our bedroom. I don’t even get to eat all the food. I get full too fast.”

He sits down on the bed and kisses my cheek. “Two more weeks, baby girl. They said as long as you made it two more weeks on bed rest that it would be okay to go into labor then.”

“I know that, Rafe. I’m a nurse. I’m just sick of looking at these walls.” My lip pouts out. “I want to make love to you and I can’t. This whole thing sucks.”

I’m a high-risk pregnancy. They just want me to reach thirty-six weeks hopefully. The twins are growing like weeds and I already know it’s a caesarian for me. It’s frustrating staring at these same walls every day since I got put on bed rest a month ago when I started having contractions.

He pats my hand. “It’s driving me crazy too, baby girl. But it’s worth it for the babies right?”

I thought for sure he’d pass out when the doctor said there were two heartbeats. His lean, tanned cheeks paled. But he smiled so broadly that I knew he was happy.

He kissed me and then smiled into my eyes. “We are blessed, baby girl. Two for one.”

“Sure…you can say that,” I grumbled. “You’re not the one carrying two babies.”

“If I could do this for you, you know I would.”

I know he would too. Two years in and we’ve been trying forever for children. We even had to go in vitro. And when we found out I was pregnant, both of us cried. It took so much not to tell anyone until we passed the point when we felt safe announcing it.

Harvey and Amanda and all the girls were over the moon. When I got put on bed rest, they helped Rafe finish up the nursery. We made it a soft green and yellow room. We didn’t want to know the sex of the babies, loving the surprise.

“What do you want right now?” he asks and I shoot him a steamy look. “Besides that,” he laughs.

“Fine,” I huff. “Can you rub my feet and legs with some lotion?”

“Absolutely, princess.” He rubs my soft floral lotion over my legs and I can see the hard length in his pants.

“You want me to take care of that,” I groan.

“Nope. Not until I can make love to you properly.”

And he settles in at my side. We turn on the television and he happily watches a sappy romantic hallmark movie with me. Laughing when I start to cry.

“It’s pregnancy hormones,” I sniffle.

He rests my head on his chest and hands me a tissue. “Of course it is.”

Then he settles me deeper into his chest and both of us relax into sleep. “Love you, princess.”

“Even though I’m big as a house,” I whimper.

“You’re the prettiest house I’ve ever seen,” he laughs. “No, seriously, baby. You’re not big. You’re just pregnant. You’re giving me the best gift anyone’s ever given me. Don’t ever forget that.”

I sigh and slip down, resting my head on his chest, listening to his heart. “Love you so much, Rafe.”

“I know,” he says and I growl.

“Conceited.”

“Absolutely. But I’ve got you to keep me grounded, baby girl. You and the girls.”

He kisses my lips gently and I cling to him, feeling our babies rolling over in my belly. “Sleep now, princess.”

And just like he orders me to, I slip into blackness, dreaming of our future with our family, a smile tugging at my lips, his hands caressing my hair gently until he drifts off too.

The End
