“Wow, that’sawesome!” Hannah crowed, and I tried to re-focus my attention.

This film was animated, and there were a bunch of people I was pretty sure were all meant to be Spiderman on the screen. I shut my mind off and very determinedly had a good time with my best friend.

“She won’t understand,” Julian said, but his hand stayed on my cheek, his lips only inches from mine.

“I can’t risk losing her, too,” I said, even as I moved minutely closer.

“I’m not sure I can stay away from you any longer, though,” Julian said.

He closed the gap between us, and I was in heaven. It was better than I remembered, with his gentle grip on me moving to my neck. I deepened the kiss, and within seconds, he had thrown me on the counter, fingers gripping my hip bones as he bit my lip and invaded my mouth with his tongue. Something foreign and unfamiliar washed over me, curling in my stomach.

“Mmm…” I moaned into his mouth.

I tipped my head back, and Julian kissed down the column of my throat, pulling the edge of my t-shirt to the side to get access to my shoulders. He had that stubble again, the same as the night when I first met him, and it scratched delightfully against my skin. I shuddered as he moved his hands over me. When he came back to my mouth, my eyes opened, and he paused before kissing me again.

“I don’t care what it takes,” he murmured, eyes a dark blue that I could drown in, “I’m going to be with you, Evelyn. We’ll make Hannah understand. You’re mine.”

“I’m yours,” I muttered back, before claiming his mouth.

I woke up and knew that I’d made a noise in my sleep. Hannah was sitting up, always an early riser, and raised one eyebrow when she saw I was awake. She immediately put her phone on her bedside table and slid down to lie next to me.

“So?” she asked.

“So what?” I retorted.

I was praying I’d said nothing incriminating, but couldn’t be sure. I could feel the heat still in my cheeks from the dream, and it had been so vivid that I could almost hear Julian’s voice again, telling me exactly what I longed to hear.

“Who is he?”

Hannah’s eyes were wide and bright in the dim light from her table lamp, and I couldn’t help but wish I could tell her everything.

“Who’s who?”

“Oh, come on, Evvie! Youclearlyhave a massive crush on some guy! That’s why you’ve been so distracted lately! Tell me about it!”

Oh, how I wanted to. I wanted to gush about him to Hannah and ask for her advice. I wanted to know what she could say to make me feel better, and agonize over the predicament with her. I couldn’t though because it would destroy this exact moment. With her like this, I knew I loved her. Not in a romantic way, but in a friendly way. I couldn’t throw away that love. If I told her, I could see exactly what would happen. She’d get up, she’d yell, she’d force me out, and worst of all, I’d know that I’d betrayed her forever.

“Nah, Han,” I laughed, “You must be the one who’s dreaming! I don’t even remember what I was dreaming about!”

She eyed me skeptically but rolled over to get her phone with a pout.

“Fine, keep your secrets,” she hissed playfully.

I swatted her and got up, happy to know she wasn’t pressing me. Yet. I knew if I acted at all like I was lovesick, she’d be on me like a dog on a bone, and I couldn’t have that.

I was scared that it wouldn’t take much for the truth to come spilling out.

As usual, Andrew made us a stunning breakfast, comprised of eggs and toast, pastries, and whatever else we could think of. I sipped on the hot chocolate that was served to me, and smiled gratefully at Victoria for it. Julian was at the table with us, poring over his iPad, where he was reading the news while forking food into his mouth. His brow furrowed at something, and I pretended not to notice.

“So, the weather is crap today,” Hannah said bluntly, not noticing the way I was watching her father.

“Yeah, you could say that,” I offered, staring outside.

One wall of the dining room was made up of glass panels, and usually, it provided a gorgeous view of the streets of New York. Today though, the trees outside were bending in the fierce wind, and the rain was lashing the glass. I had no desire to go out into it, but classes were soon.

“So, I recommend we skip class and watch movies all day,” Hannah declared.
