He went wide-eyed. “You wouldn’t.”

“Try me.”

He took a step forward. “I guess that leaves me with only one option.” He took the box from my hand, but then with his other hand he wrapped his fingers around my wrist and pulled me up to my feet. Before I knew what was happening, I was in his arms, and he was twirling me around the room.

“Yes,” he said. “I will marry you.”

I kissed him. “Oh good.”

He kissed me back, and for a long time we stood there in the warm living room, our lips pressed together and our hearts beating as one. When he finally put me down, he seemed to remember that he had a little gift in his hand.

“What’s in here anyway?”

“Open it,” I said.

He did, and then took the piece of paper out and unfolded it. He laughed when he read what was written. “How did you know, this was theexactring that I wanted?”

I shrugged. “I guess I just know you that well.” He kissed me again then excitedly held up the gift card. “Oh! They do delivery now too! I think I know what we’re having for dinner! Hey Vic, bring me my phone, we’re ordering burgers.”

Vic poked her head around the corner. “So you said yes?”

Jonah put an arm around my waist, kissed me on the cheek, and smiled at his daughter. “What do you think?”

Vic ran to us and nearly toppled us over, hugging us so hard. I ran my hand down her silky hair and kissed the top of her head, then I looked up at Jonah and beamed.

“I love you,” I said.

“I love you too,” he said.

Vic handed the phone to her dad. but I grabbed it instead. “I’ll order,” I said. “You two fix the star. It’s on the wrong bough.”

Jonah frowned up at the tree. “It is not.”

“It’s lopsided. You need to move it over a little.”

Jonah smiled at me. “You’re impossible.”

I walked away, but squeezed his hand as I did, saying over my shoulder, “And you’re the love of my life.”
