“Dax.”I cleared my throat again. Dali spun on her heels to face him with her arms crossed.

“Let me just say this, Dax. I will not get in the way of my sister’s happiness if this is true, but I will not let anyone or anything hurt her again.” I drew in a breath at Dali’s sharp words and then understood why she was so upset. I have had others in the past, mainly Hunters or humans, who couldn’t handle my gifts. Once I told them about my gifts, they didn’t believe if in what we had because they didn’t know if it was real or not. I got why she was so extra about all this but…but this is entirely different. I blinked a few times and looked up as Dax’s eyes narrowed. Then he took one step forward, completely erasing any distance we had between us.

“Who the fuck hurt her before?” His voice was a growl, and the question was deadly. Dali sucked in a breath, and I knew she saw something in his aura. I stepped around her and held up a hand.

“That was many years ago, and I’m fine. We need to get moving. We have wasted enough time already,” I said. Dax stared at me, and I swear he was trying his hardest to see into my thoughts.

“Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. We do need to get moving, but first, I need to know how you made it onto my land?” Dax asked. I turned to Dali, wondering the same thing. I watched her eyes begin to focus again, and she looked at me strangely before answering.

“I see now. Well, anyway, there is an un-warded part of your land in the dense part of the woods. I figured you all knew about it because it was dug up from the inside,” Dali frowned. I looked at her because that “I see” meant she saw more than she was letting on. Then her words registered about the grounds not being as protected as we believed.

“No. We didn’t,” Dax said as a scream ripped through the quiet of the night.

* * *

I would bedead wrong if I ever entertained the idea that I could run from Dax. As Hunters, we are fast, we are way faster than an average human, but we didn’t match shifter speed. Dax was an Alpha making him extremely fast because he was there and gone in seconds. I didn’t even see the change between wolf and man. He was in motion as he took one step, then shifted into a giant white wolf without breaking his stride.

“Beautiful,” Dali said as the howls filled the air. I completely agreed as my feet started moving while I took out a blade. Dali was next to me as we made our way to the screams.

“Dali, do you sense anything?” I said as we leaped over a car and landed in a crouch.

“No! There is no demon anywhere near here!” She said as we started moving once again. I couldn’t deny that I was happy my sister decided to show up, anyway. Having her unique gift of remote viewing always came in handy at times like this because something was wrong. I saw at least fifteen wolves squaring off with the wolves of the Rayne Pack. It looked like Dax had his other enforcers spread across the property, and the ones in the house were going to go with us.

“Dali!” I said as we slowed down. Dax was larger than any wolf I had ever seen in my life. His fur was pure white, but the violet of his now enormous eyes lit the night with an eerie glow.

“Devana, something…no this…we need to go. This is a distraction!” Dali yelled. I hadn’t noticed that Max and Thomas were beside us until I looked at my sister. Her eyes were unfocused as the brown swirled with a mix of gray. I knew she saw what we could not and that it would be happening soon, whatever it was.

“What the hell is she talking about?” Max asked as he kept an eye on our surroundings.

“There is no demon here. Something is up, and the fact that those wolves are cowering in Dax’s presence means they are weak. They are a distraction and were sent to be slaughtered. The rogue didn’t count on Dax’s significant Alpha power. We need to get to those other Pack members who aren’t protected. Now!” I saw Max and Thomas share a glance before Thomas shifted into a large white wolf with a sable tint. His wolf was just as beautiful as his brother’s. It wouldn’t matter because whatever it was about that white wolf with the violet eyes, I could never truly see another wolf.

“Thomas will be able to handle these Betas along with the enforcers,” Max said as he stared at his brothers. I knew they were all communicating mentally, and it stung that I couldn’t do the same with Dax.

“I will help as well. I do not trust these wolves whether they submit or not. They will not stay on these lands,” Remi said. I looked to my right, where the sultry voice came from, and found Remi watching the wolves with glowing teal eyes. It was almost as if her eyes were pools of ocean water. I started to ask what she meant exactly, but then Dax howled, and the rogue wolves all dropped to their belly, whining.

“Dax agrees, Remi. He wants you and Thomas to care for the land in his absence now. Hunters, let’s move,” Max said as Dax turned and pinned me with his eyes.

Dax looked at me and then at the truck that was pulling up with Dimitri inside. “Dax has said plans have changed and wants you with Dimitri,” Max said before taking off. I looked back at Dax when he took off in a blur of motion as the SUV screeched to a stop. I looked back, seeing Dali blinking, and noticed Max holding her hip lightly.

“I’m good, Vana. Go! There is no time. I will go with Max,” she said. I wasted no more time as I dove inside the truck, and Dimitri took off in the same direction Dax ran.

“Did I get this right that this was a distraction and the others are the target?” Dimitri asked. The truck hit a bump, and I grabbed the handle so I could hold on. He spun the wheel hard and damned near just about tipped us over as he hit a hard turn. It brought us out onto a paved road in the back area of the property.

“Yes.”

“How do we know which house the demon will show up to?” He asked. Dimitri kept darting quick glances my way, but I didn’t have an answer. How would we know which home of the Pack member he would show up for personally? “Well? Think Hunter! You know demons better than any of us, so where would he show up?”

“It’s not as easy as your…” My words cut off at the memory of the vision I had earlier. The one I had before all the drama got in the way. I closed my eyes, slowing everything down in that last vision, ignoring the Black Dog’s red eyes, and focused on the surrounding land. The smoke and smell of death clogged my senses, but as I looked around, I saw it. A black truck turned on its side and small faces peeked through the windows of a one-story house. One face I focused on damn near stopped my heart from beating.

“Turn around! Turn around!” I looked all around us, but there was nothing but trees on both sides of this paved road. Dimitri hit the brakes hard, good thing I put my hand out in time to catch myself before my head slammed into the dash. “The vision changed at the last minute! I didn’t notice it at first because I was pulled out of it, but it started to change when he knew I could see…he…we need to get back to the house!” I said firmly. A deep growl filled the vehicle’s space, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Dimitri spun the wheel and started back to the house.

“Fuck! Fuck!” Dimitri growled while hitting the stirring wheel. I pulled out my phone to call Dali as the truck sped up. “Who are you calling?”

“My sister! They…”

“They still need to check on the Pack members. The bastard still could have sent others there to hunt them or kidnap them. I sent out a call for the Alpha. It will be up to us and whoever is still on the property until he gets back.”

“You’re right, but they will need to check the house we were going to as well.”
