“Vana!” My sister finally answered.

“Dali! Listen, the demon is at the house! I know it.”

“We’re on the…”

“No, no, you need to check on the other Pack members to make sure they are safe and let Max know he needs to get to the house we were going to check out.”

“Devana, are you sure? You know demons, and they are fucking tricky as shit. It could be fucking with you.”

“It already did, but I saw it. I caught the change just like the one that made me come here in the first place.”

“Shit! Fine, fine, we will, but I will be there as soon as we get these wolves safe. Don’t do anything that will get you killed or…”

“It will be fine. Just…just watch your back. I’ll see you soon,” I said, ending the call. I knew what she wanted to say, but I wasn’t trying to hear it. Since I started hunting demons, they have always wanted my eyes. Too many legends say eyes are the doorway to one’s soul. They should say that eyes are the doorway to a Hunter’s soul, and without their eyes, they will never see the gates of their final home.

Iheld a mental connection with everyone that is a part of my Pack, but it was stronger when it came to my brothers and my Beta. Many shifters sometimes can lose themselves to their animal, if only for a moment, but being an Alpha, that has never happened. When I stood looking at these weaker wolves who thought to attack my Pack on my land, I felt the need my wolf had and struggled not just to kill them all. I could see that they were all just sacrifices to this fake Alpha’s cause. Before I heard Devana’s words, I knew that they were not the enemy, but I would be damned if they harmed anyone.

“Alpha! Turn back!”

“Dimitri, what the hell is happening? I am near to Matthew’s home, and he has four pups…”

“No! Shit has changed. Your Mate said the vision changed, and he is going to attack the Pack land.”

“Fuck!”

I could see the house up ahead, but I knew Devana would not have me turn back if she was not absolutely sure her vision had changed. What did she see that made her come to this decision? If I had given her my mark, I would have known what she was thinking and seeing. I felt the rumble in my chest as my wolf agreed with my thoughts. It didn’t matter because some damage would be done to my people before I made it back. How could I continue to call myself their Alpha when I failed to keep them safe once again.

“You are not the one who chooses to be an Alpha. That choice and privilege belong to me.”

As an Alpha, there have always been talks of the creator of shifters, more specifically wolf shifter kind. It is instinct to know when that being is speaking to you as an Alpha.

“Kannuck.”

I stopped in my tracks, even though my paws and heart wanted me to keep moving when he spoke. WhenKannuckspeaks to you, you stop whatever you are doing, no matter what is happening.

“If you want the children of Alphas who are all Alphas to succeed in saving your species, a sacrifice must be made. If you, Dax Rayne as Alpha of the Rayne Pack, want to fulfill the prophecy, you must first claim the gift that has been given to you. The power that will be needed to save all my children will lie in your willingness to claim.”

The thoughts rushing around in my head from his words had me confused. The problem is that the God of wolves was gone instantly, leaving his cryptic message behind. I didn’t have time to understand what it meant, but I knew a part of it had to do with this rogue. I was the Alpha, and I knew all my strengths and weakness. I knew the gifts I possessed and what I did not. Whatever gift belonging to me, I would find, and I would claim it if that meant saving my Pack. I refused to let them down again. I would give my life before letting this rogue tear through my Pack like he did others before mine. As I ran through the trees at a speed I knew my brothers would have trouble keeping up with, I thought about the words that weren’t all meant for this moment. They weren’t even meant just for me, but for all of us. The Rayne Alphas all had a part to play, and we all had to play our role in saving not just our Pack but the entire species of wolf shifters.

I knewDevana and Dimitri would make it back to the Pack before I would. Once I reached my home, I thought of what I might find almost had my wolf in a blind panic. I was Alpha, and I wanted my family and my Pack safe. That had my wolf moving at a speed that made the trees and the stars in the sky seem as if they were nothing but smudges. The violet of my eyes burned as they lit the night. I had no problem seeing every branch, animal, hole, or fallen tree in my path. I moved through this land as if it were nothing because I could feel every inch of what belonged to me as Alpha. I could feel the battle taking place and feel the pain of my Pack members as they fought. I knew that many wolves were attacking, and that concerned me. I knew there was a breach in my wards, but I also knew that it was closed as soon as I went to bring the rest of my wolves home. My anger spiked to new heights. Now that I know that someone is removing the wards placed, I stretched out my energy to all the wards surrounding my property. That is how I knew when the fucking demon stepped foot on my land and how I could feel that not only one ward had fallen, but another and another after that. I sensed the magic in the air just as I felt all the wards to the property began to crumble.

Suddenly, like a punch to my senses, I could feel the hidden presence of over seventy wolves, and they had my entire property surrounded as they moved in on my Pack for the kill. No one, not even Devana, had sensed this demon or Alpha was using a Witch. Only a Witch stronger than the one I had could have destroyed the wards from the outside. Or the Witch that made them in the first place was the one who broke them. “Peter!” I let out a howl of rage just as another scent filled my nose. The rumbling growl deep in my chest grew violent, as my rage at the scent I already knew like it was my own, almost broke the spirit of my wolf. Damn near my heart as a man.

I knew I was still miles away, but I could smell the blood in the air. A lot of the blood is from wolves on both sides, but the sudden sharp scent that crashed into my senses had me shifting into the third form. The shift was done in an instant. I went from standing on all fours to standing on two legs with long claws as hands. I already stood at six feet and seven inches, but I knew now I was over seven feet tall. I drew in a long breath, and that scent I knew so well and so quickly was coming from my Mate, and it was a deadly amount! After over two hundred years, I just found my Mate, and I would not lose her. I was an Alpha, the Alpha of this Pack and state. This rogue will not take another wolf, Pack, life, breath, and for damn sure not my MATE!

DEVANA

The truck hadn’t even reached the start of the homes on Dax’s property when we noticed the wolves hidden in the trees. They were waiting for something, but it didn’t matter because I could feel the demon and the heaviness of evil that hung in the night’s air.

“How did we not see them when we left? This is impossible!” Dimitri grunted. He spun the wheel as we hit a curve at top speed. The tires slid on the dirt road, but he course-corrected so we wouldn’t tip over, and then he pressed harder on the gas. I could see the wolves hidden in the tree line. Their eyes glowed bright amber or yellow as we flew by, but I didn’t feel the demon was with these wolves. He was here, though, but maybe on the other side of the property.

“They had to have been here, though. We would have seen them when leaving,” I said. I reached down to the holster strapped to my thigh and pulled out my P17 .22 pistol.

“You a thug now or something? I thought all you Hunters used blades or the ninja swords,” Dimitri asked.
