“This is not a normal flame! Get the hell out of here!” I shouted. I caught the eyes of Jarod, and he howled for our Pack to gather closer to him. I knew he had a shield, but I didn’t know how long that would last. I saw the woman dragging Cassius’s body toward her as Aeron’s Pack began to circle around the Hunter. I moved, then backhanded the wolves that were circling out of the way. I used my other hand to toss her over to where Dali and Max were standing.

“No! No!” The woman screamed, but Dali wrapped her in her arms, pulling her behind the shield Jarod was creating.

“Now, I will make you pay for me to become the superior being! I will be the only True Alpha and the only Alpha to every wolf on this planet!” Aeron snarled. He spread his wings wide and lifted his arms.

“I think I said this once before, you are no Alpha and never have been!” I roared. Aeron used those bat-like smokey gray wings to lift high into the air. His eyes turned to pitch black, then bled back to crimson once more while looking over the destruction he brought to this land.

“RUN!” I shouted to my Pack because I realized what Aeron was about to do. I knew more flames were coming, and this time, he would aim it for my people no matter who was in the way of it!

Iknew that we had to end this and end it now. I knew we were needed on the other side, and right fucking now. Remi and Thomas kept the birds away, but I had to stop every so often. I shot one to draw what I needed on the ground. So many of these demon birds should have been impossible to get here, but I did not know how long the demon had worked to bring them over. The screeching and flipping of wings had me wanting to cover my ears. I heard Thomas howl and knew he had shifted. His massive paws swiped over my head as I drew the symbols that needed to turn the entire Potomac River into Holy water. At least for enough time to put these birds down.

“Few more seconds!” I screamed before I started to chant the words that I needed to make this happen. I would never question my father again about the need to learn such prayers.

“Hurry! The wolves are coming!” Remi grunted as a bird dug its talons into her arm. I noticed slightly that her face rippled and shifted. Her mouth widened as she used gigantic teeth for ripping the bird into pieces. She didn’t even pause as she pulled a double-barrel shotgun off her back and fired.

“Take the pistol in my thigh holster. Tell our Pack to back off before you shoot! Just wait long enough for all the wolves to get closer.” I said. I slammed both hands to the ground when I heard an agonizing scream. The scream had the barrier crumbling piece by piece, and I felt it like a punch to the gut. I felt my heart crack down the center. I spoke the word that I was taught by the man who had just lost his life. My father had died because I didn’t see this coming. The rage, pain and heartbreak almost consumed me. The symbols lit up where my hand was pressed into the earth. The blue light burned before exploding into a golden glow that rolled over the water, making the dark water shine golden. I turned back, seeing the birds had lifted away from the light, but as the golden light began to dim, they arrowed back down toward us. The wolves came through the trees with dimly lit red eyes as they snarled. I felt the tears rolling down my cheeks and the anger at the one who killed my father rise in my chest.

“Remi! Now!” I roared. My voice deepened, and I felt my skin rippling while my teeth began to grow. I heard the shots, but nothing else mattered as I shifted into my wolf. I lifted my head and let out a long howl as I turned to make my way over the river and towards my Mate. This had to end tonight, and I would destroy this demon if I had anything to say about it.

“Use the river! Stop the birds.”

I sent the command mentally to Remi and Thomas. As I made it onto the other side, I turned back to see Remi knee-deep in the water, as her teal eye glowed and swirled like a storm. She moved her arms in what almost looked like a dance, making the water from the river shoot up. I turned away, leaving it in their hands. Remi seemed to be way more than I believed. She held tremendous power over water, and I don’t think that even scratched its surface. I leaped into the air and landed beside my mother and Dali. I saw the rage and anger on her face when she saw me, thinking I was a part of this attack. She reached out and grabbed a gun from Dali and pointed it at my massive head.

“Mother! No! That’s Devana! It’s Devana!” Dali said, holding her arms out between us. My mother’s hand shook uncontrollably, and her tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Wha..what have you done? Wh…why..,” she stammered. Just her thinking I had anything to do with this shit had me barring my teeth.

“No! She has nothing to do with what’s happening! It is because of a demon! This is all because of a demon! These wolves are not with the True Alpha or the Rayne Pack, Mother.” Dali tried to explain. I didn’t have time for it, though, because I had to get to my Mate. This fight wasn’t meant for him to fight alone. This had to be won together!

“RUN!” Dax roared. I looked to Max, Jarod and Dali. I nodded and jumped over my mother and the other wolves. I felt Jarod’s shield buckle and come down. I didn’t look back to see if they followed Dax’s orders because I knew they would. Hell, I prayed they listened, but the scent of the demon was so strong that I didn’t think anything of Aeron had to be left. Most of our Pack heard him and moved away. I saw a young wolf still standing in the middle of our Pack fighting its way out of this field. He looked stunned and unable to move, and I realized that this must be his first battle. He hadn’t even shifted or noticed the flames coming toward him. I saw Aeron breathe flames out of his mouth, and I knew instantly what they were. This demon could breathe Hellfire, and if that touched any part of the body, it would consume it on sight. If this demon controlled this fire, things could get even worse from here. The flames came down at the field, aiming to burn everyone. Thanks to Dax’s warning, most of the ones who stayed were Aeron’s Pack. The only one who couldn’t seem to move was this young wolf who was stuck in place as the ashy red flames were approaching. I saw the moment Aeron’s wolves realize what their so-called Alpha was doing. I saw the betrayal and ingratitude roll over their features as they saw the flames ready to turn them to ashes by the powers of their own leader.

I moved across the grass to the wolf that stared in horror at what was happening. I dodged around stunned wolves who watched their Alpha in disbelief. Some shifters ran and tried to get away, but I knew we had a split second before the breath of Hellfire touched the ground. I leaped up in the air and knocked the young wolf out of the path of the flames. The young Pack member hit the ground as the first of the fire consumed everything in its path. I saw the ashy red of the fire cover the ground. I dodged out of the way of the flames as screams of torment rose all around me. Each victim it reached crumbled, and I caught the eyes of the young wolf that saw that the inferno was still coming to wipe him out of this world.“No!”I screamed in my mind. My howled pierced the night, cutting through the screams and whining of pain.

I felt Devana before I saw her, but I knew the barrier was down. I turned and caught sight of Devana as she knocked Kendrick out of the way of the flames. I shifted into my wolf form as I bounded my way over to the kid. A sense of helplessness covered the young wolf’s face as another wave of blazing fire went in his direction. I heard the mental screams of my Mate when she caught sight of what I already saw happening. I was already on the move and snatched up the pup in my jaws without hurting him. I moved us out of the path of the flames that would have engulfed and caused unbearable torture before he burned to ash like the rest of the wolves who got caught up in the Hellfire. I dropped the boy to the ground and shifted back into my human form to scan the pup for any damages that I couldn’t see. Kendrick opened his eyes as I looked him over.

“Al…Alpha? What the hell is happening? What was that shit?”

“Are you okay, kid?” I asked. I looked around to see if I spotted Devana. I could feel her, so I reached out mentally.

“Dax! You have him. God, I thought I got him out of the way!”

“He’s all good, but we have to stop this. How do we stop this demon? It seems more to the surface now the moon is at its peak. It’s suppressing the wolf inside of it and is taking over.”I said, looking back at the field of fire.

“He didn’t spare his own Pack. What type of Alpha does something like that? He cries for purity but kills his own Pack! He isn’t worth being called a wolf, let alone an Alpha!” Kendrick spat.

“Exactly! As long as you know the difference between right and wrong in this world, you will do fine, pup.” I saw Devana leap across the fire that hadn’t died out and quickly reached our side. She was pure white like my wolf except for the light brown fur on her paws. Her burning green with a hint of brown eyes landed on me and then the kid. The giant wolf sniffed at a wide-eyed Kendrick to make sure he was okay, like I said.

“Lu…Luna. Thank you.” Before I could say anything, Devana shifted into her human form but couldn’t keep her clothes. The pup looked everywhere but at either of us as I took my tee shirt off and gave it to her. It was covered in blood and dirt but better than nothing.

“First thing I need you to teach me is how do I keep my clothes! Dragonskin is hard as fuck to come by.”

She turned to Kendrick, who stared at the lumps of ashes that were covering the entire area. “Kendrick, I need you to get a message to my sister. You know who she is, right?”

“Yes. The Hunter with the big ass guns.”
