“Hunter, you are here about the demon, not the wolf. He is my problem. Aeron is my Pack business, and we handle Pack business. Not the Vampires and for sure not no fucking Hunters.” I heard the disdain in my voice, but it was too late. I saw her jerk back a little, and I was on my feet, reaching out to her. This shit was all new to me, and I damn sure was not expecting my Mate to be a part of the one group I hated the most. “Devana…”

“No. No, you’re right, and it was my fault for saying that. Let’s get to business, Daxton. You saw this vision, but not the first one, so let me clue you in on what we are dealing with,” she said. I could see the steel door slamming shut, and when it did, it left just a Hunter. It was all good because we had time, and she would forgive me. She would stay whether she thought so or not.

I closed my mouth and moved over to the windows, watching as the sun started to set. I made it a point to shut my mind about what we should be discussing. Just seeing what I did told me my Pack was in serious danger and that Aeron and his crew were getting closer.

“I’m listening, Hunter.” It was silent for a moment as she stared at me. I could feel her fiery gaze roaming my body, but I couldn’t look at her.

“My first vision of this wolf was in the middle of him killing a Pack in Alabama a few months back. I was confused at first because I could tell this hadn’t been the first Pack to die. He started with smaller Packs at first, which wouldn’t be considered missing. I should have known this first vision was different when I saw everything through his eyes.”

“You saw him kill the entire Pack or just a few?” I turned to face her to see the answer to that question. By the looks of it, that had never happened before. She grimaced at the memory of the vision, and it told me it had to be gruesome.

“I don’t know what I came in on or where exactly it happened, but my vision started when he tore the throat out of a Beta. The Alpha was already dead, and he stood over this Beta waiting for him to die. I could smell the death and hear the screams of frightened children and adult shifters. I already knew I would have to report this, but I wasn’t getting involved. I knew our help wouldn’t be appreciated or wanted, but all that went up in smoke when I heard the voice.

“What voice? From someone around him?” I pushed away from the window to sit down at my desk. Devana came over as I started going through names and numbers of other Alpha Wolf shifters in North America. We had to stop this crazy fucking wolf before he or his message spreads overseas. We all knew of wolves who thought the same way, looking down on wolves who were transformed or half-breed. Those kinds whispered about it behind closed doors and never acted on it, but if they caught wind of it, things could change. Their words may become action, and none of us needed that shit.

“No, not from around him, but inside him. The voice was in Aeron’s head. It was a demon that is when I knew whether a wolf kind accepted my help or not. I had to get involved. So, I did what I could and reached out to my contacts, which put me in touch with Quinn.”

“Okay. This is what has to happen now. Aeron is close to my state, and he already made it clear he was coming for me. We need to stop him and his followers before they even think of stepping foot onto the soil of my state. Rogue wolves that deal in the type of violence his ass is doing doesn’t get the grace period of two days to make themselves known.” I finished emailing my contacts to ensure them that it stops here. Even though I knew I would beat his ass down and make him submit, everyone else still should be on guard.

“Has anything like this ever happened before?” Devana asked as she picked up a picture of Lily and Garrett from Halloween. I saw her small smile before placing the picture back on the desk. I waited for her eyes to look into mine. Instead, her eyes changed again to a deep green that held flicks of gold around the irises.

“I thought Hunters kept records of everything?” She rolled her eyes and waved me off. “Naw, I’m serious. I thought you all kept a running record of everything in supernatural history. That’s what I was told, but it could have changed by now. It’s been long enough.” I shut my computer down, pushing thoughts of Cassandra away.

“Who told you that? I mean, we do, but I figured you could give me a first-hand account since you… since you are a shifter.” She hurried to finish.

“Why would I have a first-hand account? Maybe the question should be, how would you know that I would have a first-hand account?” I asked.

“Never mind. Do you have a room where I can put my things and make some calls? How long do we have before your Pack meeting?” She inquired. I pressed for more information, but time wasn’t on our side at the moment.

“Yeah, sure. My room is across the hall. Use it in any way you need. There are fresh towels in the master bath.” I smiled. I saw the instant heat in her eyes and the blush that colored her cheeks. I couldn’t wait to strip her out of those clothes and show her this wasn’t something she could walk away from permanently.

“I’m not using your damn room. Do you have a spot for me or not? I could always just use my car. Unfortunately, I have been in worst conditions.” She cocked her head to the side, raising a perfectly arched eyebrow.

“There is a spare room next to mine and a bathroom in the hall next to it. Feel free to use that room while you’re here. As for the meeting, it’s Pack only.” I stated. I moved around my desk, heading for the doors to get up with my brothers and Beta. They needed this information, and we needed to double down on our defenses. Shit was getting hot, and I refused to let my Pack suffer any more of the bullshit. I moved fast, probably faster, than her thoughts could comprehend what I had said. I wasn’t about to argue with her about my Pack. I was out the door and down the stairs when I heard her yell my name.

“Daxton!”

Few people knew that Daxton was my given name. The only person who used it was my mother, and she died nineteen years ago. Since her death, no one has used it, not even my brothers. So if I were real with myself, it felt good to hear it again, especially from my Mate. Still, no one outside of my mother and Cassandra ever called me that. So how would she even know it?

DEVANA

Dax was down the stairs and out of the door before I even made it to the top. I looked over and saw three doors and started for them. I had a bag inside my car that I would need to bring up, but I just need a breather for now. I opened one door leading to the bathroom, so I tried the other and saw a modest room with a king-sized bed, two dressers, a large window and a tv on the wall. I went in and closed the door, seeing a massive closet on the far side of the room and another door next to the one I had just came through. I opened that door and verified that it was a connecting door to the bathroom in the hall. I stepped inside, locked the door leading into the hall, and left the one open in my room. Dax may think I wouldn’t be at that meeting, but he had another thing coming. I moved over to the plush bed and sat down. I pulled my cell out and hit the speed dial to call my sister. I had little time to fill her in on what I had to do because I knew she would run to our parents. They supported getting back into what we were meant to be doing and realized how their beliefs had been wrong. They spoke of days in the past where this was exactly what we should do, and they knew they weren’t living up to their responsibilities. Still, it wouldn’t stop them from forbidding me to go to Pack lands and getting involved this way.

“Vana, where are you? Please don’t tell me you went alone to deal with this demon,” Dali asked. I could hear the panic and irritation in her voice.

“Chill out Dali, I’m good. I have a backup if I need it. I just wanted to check in and let you know everything is cool.”

“Everything is cool, you say? Is that the story you’re sticking with, Devana?” I rolled my eyes. I slipped off my leather jacket and hung it on a nearby desk chair. I saw the computer and wondered if I needed a code. I hit the power button and waited for the screen to light up.

“Yes. What else is there to say? When I find the demon, I will deal with it. I shouldn’t be any longer than a week or so. Any longer, then maybe you should start looking for me.”

“Devana! You got to be kidding me with this shit! Mother and Father know exactly where you are and want a video call at nine tonight.”

“What the hell do you mean, know where I am? I know they didn’t have me tailed or tracked! I am a grown-ass woman who has been dealing with demons for over eighty years, sister. This has to stop.” I said, shaking my head. “They had their time and fucked it up. I will not sit by while innocent shifters die. Not this time,” I snapped.

“Quinn called Vana. He spoke to Father about the situation. He said, and I quote, ‘Thank you, sir, for sending your daughter Devana to help the wolf shifter nation with this problem. I believe this may be a start of mending the broken relationship between our people.’ Father told him that it was no problem, and he knows you will do what needs to be done!” Dali was pissed, and I knew it. I made my way back to the door to get my bag out of the car. I was going to need a hot ass shower after this conversation.
