“I’m just… stuck.”

“What would you want to do if you could?”

She tilted her head, considering the question. “Hmm. Maybe leave Beaver Bend for a tropical vacation for a change of scenery. Or even a weekend in Minneapolis, where I could go to the art museum and eat in a trendy restaurant.”

Liam didn’t even hesitate. “Let’s go to Minneapolis then.”

“What do you mean? When?”

“Right now.” Why not? It would do Lilly some good to get out of Beaver Bend. Hell, it would do him good. She wasn’t the only one in a rut of late. He could use some excitement himself.

“Now?”

“Well, after dinner. I’m looking forward to the New York strip.”

ChapterFour

Lilly stared at Liam, convinced he had to be joking. “Are you joking?”

“I’m not joking.”

He wasn’t joking.

“But…”

“But what?”

“I don’t really know.” What real objection did she actually have? She didn’t have any children, pets, or house plants. She had no plans for Saturday or Sunday. Eating the avocado she’d bought before it went brown didn’t count as a plan and other than that she had nothing.

The only issue was that it was impulsive.

There wasn’t actually a real reason to say no.

She still felt compelled to protest though. “We don’t have a hotel booked.”

“I can do it on my phone right now.”

“Two rooms?”

“Of course, if that’s more comfortable for you. My treat, since it was my idea.”

Her heart was racing a little at the idea of just hitting the road at nine or ten o’clock at night. It felt… exciting. But then she immediately felt guilty over the cost, because that’s how she was raised. If someone was offering to treat you, it was polite to go the cheapest route possible. It was ingrained in her from her parents and grandparents, and probably had insulted a gift-giver here and there over the years, but she couldn’t stop herself from offering him an out.

“Or we could get a room with two beds. Hotel rooms are really expensive.”

Liam didn’t even blink. “Or we could do that. Whatever you want.”

“Okay.” Just like that. She had said okay.

He smiled, and without warning, her stomach flipped. That was a sexy smile.

Lilly took another big sip of her wine. Was she losing it completely? This was Sullivan’sdad.

“Fantastic. Let’s order dinner then I’ll find us a hotel room.”

Yep. Just like that.

Oddly, she didn’t feel any sort of panic setting in. If anything she felt it again… excitement.
