She cast three more back to back. I deflected two and redirected the last.

I heard Enzo scream, and we both looked at him. Apparently, one of the deflect spells hit him in the arm.

“What the hell?” He grabbed his arm.

Barrett patted him on the shoulder. “You’ll be ok, it’s just a flesh wound.”

“Flesh wound my ass!”

“Go inside and see Jace. He’ll have something to help.”

He huffed and then went inside.

I heard the crackle of another spell as I was watching him.

“Lilibet! I wasn’t even paying attention.”

“Looks like you were.” She smiled.

“I feel like you’re enjoying this too much.”

“Maybe a little.”

Chapter thirty-eight

Lilibet - The Miner Seven

“AreyousureIcan stay for dinner?” I asked Snow as we were walking back in from the field. What had once been luscious green grass now had several burn spots throughout it, looking like a dragon’s yard.

She smiled. “Of course.” She looped her arm through mine. “Thanks for helping me today. I really appreciate it.”

I grabbed her hand with my other. “I kind of like you and hope you don’t die.”

Snow chuckled, and it reminded me of wind chimes dancing in the air. “Me too.”

We walked into the house. It had been a while since I stepped foot in here but nothing much had changed.

That’s not true.

Snow had changed it.

There was something that seemed different about the place, even though everything seemed the same. The air was different. There was a unity, and that’s not to say there wasn’t before, because the miner seven were always a tight-knit group, but something was definitely different. The way they looked at her, it was like she was theirs… all of theirs. Even Barrett’s, I saw regrettably.

He was different on the field, even though he was trying to hide it, but it was a feeling.

I watched Snow talk to Calix, and she radiated light- it was hard to turn away from.

She looked at me and smiled, giving me a thumbs up before walking back over.

“Dinner’s all good. Want to run up to the showers with me so we can clean all this dirt and ash off of us?”

“Need any help?” Enzo shouted from the couch. I hadn’t even seen him there.

“Maybe next time.” Snow called over her shoulder, walking up the stairs.

“Promises, promises.”

“I have some extra clothes if you want to borrow them?”
