Chapter thirty-nine

Snow - Journey to the Castle

“Oh,Snow.”Mymother'sface looked worn and tired, but the room was still the same.

“What’s wrong?”

“Time is running out.”

“What do you mean? Is it papa?”

“No… not yet. The Queen. She’s getting angry. I can feel it.”

“She’s getting mad because she can’t kill me?”

“Yes. She’s getting help.”

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t trust-”

I felt a light tap on my shoulder and opened my eyes to an enormous figure standing beside the bed. I jumped before I realized it was Gage. I blinked hard to get the sleep out of my eyes, but he was still there… this was not my imagination.

He waved me towards him, and I looked around. I was laying in between Enzo and Jace. Calix had decided to sleep in his own bed tonight since he had to get up early in the morning. He had planned to prepare a feast for us all before our trek to the castle to deal with the dark Queen.

I gently stood up, and he reached over and grabbed me under the armpits and lifted me with ease over Jace and off the bed. I slid down his chest as he lowered me to the floor. I looked up at him.

His eyes seemed different than usual, darker, almost gray looking.

“What-”

He pressed his finger over my lips and gently guided me out of the room.

When the door shut, he removed his finger and whispered. “Let’s go.”

“Go where?”

“After the Queen.”

I shook my head. “That’s not the plan. We’re all going to leave later.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“You don’t even know the plan.” I retorted, irritated by his simple dismissal.

He replayed it back to me, word for word. “Werewolves have super hearing.” He rolled his eyes like I should have known that. “The others are going to get hurt, possibly killed. You don’t want that, do you?”

“No, of course not.”

“Plus, if we leave now, she won’t be expecting anything.”

I narrowed my eyes at him for a second.

“You said you wanted my help. Well here I am. I’ll protect you.” He whispered, brushing my hair behind my ear. “You trust me, don’t you?”

“I do.” I grabbed his hand and stared at him. He was normally not this affectionate, but I would take it.

“I need to go to my room and change.”
