“I have your clothes in my room,” he blurted.

“You’ve already thought of everything, haven’t you?” I smiled, patting his chest.

“I know how important this is.”

We walked down the steps to his room and I saw my clothes laying on the bed and quickly changed. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”

“I thought you said you trusted me?”

“I do.” I defended, even though it still felt wrong leaving the others.

He nodded. “Ok then.” He peeked out of his door. “Let’s go.”

I followed him downstairs and grabbed my quiver and bow off the wall.

The moon was still high in the sky, and the air was cool. I glanced at Gage curiously. Something seemed a little off about the way he was acting, but I knew he wouldn’t do anything to hurt me, even though he didn’t seem to believe it.

“So…” I started, not really knowing what to say, but also not feeling comfortable with the silence between us.

He looked at me, but we continued walking in silence.

“I don’t get you sometimes. You had nothing to do with helping on the field or the conversation last night. Honestly, I didn’t even think you cared, but here you are now…”

He didn’t speak for a few minutes. “I wasn’t going to waste my time while you all discussed irrational thoughts and ideas that were bound to get you all killed.”

“But this way’s not?”

“No, and the others will be safe.”

“And us?”

He glanced at me, then ducked down, pulling me with him.

“Wha-”

He pushed his finger over my mouth as he stuck his nose in the air.

He was smelling the air, I realized. Super hearing and super smelling? What else did he have?

He stood up a minute later, and we continued walking.

“Everything good now?”

He nodded as we continued stomping over branches.

“Why are we going this way? This isn’t the normal path to the castle.” I asked, batting a branch out of my way.

“It’s quicker.”

“To get to the castle?”

“Yes.”

I laughed. “Go to the castle so much you know short cuts do you?”

He rolled his eye at me, but ignored my question.

“I seriously hope it’s quicker, because it sucks.” I jumped off a log and landed on another broken branch, stumbling into Gage.
