I walked upstairs to my bedroom after pausing at Gage’s door, wondering what would happen if I walked in. Would he push me out or would he give into the temptation and take me?

I fell into bed, staring out the window, trying to figure out what had just happened until I fell asleep.

“Darling?”

“Mama, is that you?”

The room slowly came into focus. It was the same room as last time, with a little more detail.

The walls were a wet stone that was quickly being replaced with wall paper as I looked around the room. There was a beautiful deep, dark blue on the bottom half and dark green on the top with a golden ribbon criss-crossed throughout.

Sitting in her chair in the corner was mama.

“You need to be careful with those miners. There’s darkness in some of them.”

“But they have been so kind, taking me in.” I shook my head. “How do you know about them?”

“I know a lot of things.”

“You said last time I had to go home and help papa.”

“Yes. He needs you, but not before you're ready.”

“Ready? Ready for what?”

“For your battle with the dark Queen.”

“I don’t think I can fight her.”

“You can. You are stronger than you know.”

“You said she practices the dark arts. She will have magic.”

“You have power too.” She stood up and crossed the room.

“I’m not a witch.”

“Her being a witch doesn’t make her powerful.”

“It sure helps. I can’t compete with that…”

“You don’t have to be a witch to wield power, Snow.”

“She seems to use it to wield her power. I mean, look at what she has done to Papa. Do you know how he is?”

“He is fine. He is safe… for now.”

“What do you mean?”

“There are things you need to know that I can’t tell you.”

“You said that last time.”

“And it’s still true today.”

“Who can tell me?”

“Find a white witch by the name of Persephone.”
