“Persephone?”

“Yes. She can tell you what you need to hear. But you must hurry and find her.”

“Where? Where is she?”

“Find a purple mangor. Bring it berries from the bosom bush and tell it what you seek. It will help guide the way.”

“A purple mangor. I’ve never seen a purple mangor before.”

“Ask the wind and nature will provide.”

She started slipping away again, fading into a fine mist.

I yelled out for her to stay, but it was too late.

“Scarlet! Scarlet! Wake up.”

I opened my eyes and saw Enzo standing over my bed. “What?”

“You were screaming. Crying out.”

“I was? I’m so sorry.”

He climbed into bed and wrapped his arms around me. “Do you want to tell me about it?”

I heard a creak at the door and saw someone walking away. I couldn’t tell who it was, and it felt weird to call out for them now.

“I don’t really remember much.” I lied, because even though I felt like I could trust Enzo and all the miner seven, she warned me to be careful.

“You seemed terrified.”

“I did?” I rested my head on his chest.

“You’re safe here.”

After a few moments, I asked. “Have you ever heard of a purple mangor?

“The bird?”

“Yea.”

“Not a purple one. Red and blue, but never purple.”

“I didn’t think so either.”

“Why? Is that what your dream was about?”

I mumbled a noise, not really sure what to say. How do you tell someone, you’re dreaming of your dead mother who you’ve never met and she’s telling you that you need to talk to the wind to find a bird that doesn’t exist so it can lead you to a white witch that will tell you something that you need to know about yourself so you can defeat the dark Queen who also happens to be your stepmother and a witch? I took a gasp, running out of breath in my head just thinking through all of that.

“Do you want me to stay with you?”

I looked up at him. “Would you?”

“Sure.”

I rested my head back on his chest and closed my eyes.
