With the physical work living in Alaska requires, I was able to bulk back up to the size I’d been in my NFL days. I hoped that didn’t intimidate Amelia.

The pilot opened the plane door and out walked the sexiest woman I’d ever seen.

Amelia was wearing jeans and a sweater, her long hair blowing in the wind. Her jeans hugged her curvaceous ass and I noticed the pilot checking her out.

Jealousy washed over me, a feeling new to me. I never cared before when other people checked out my fiance or any other girl I’d been dating. It made me feel smug, like they were envious of what I had.

But Amelia was mine and I didn’t want anyone else looking at her.

I hurried outside to greet her, shooting the pilot daggers before smiling at Amelia who was now standing in front of me with a worn out backpack slung over one shoulder.

“Hey, Amelia, welcome to Alaska.”

AMELIA

William Anderson was even more attractive than his picture. His smile was much better in person and his baby blue eyes matched the color of the Alaskan sky.

I wasn’t surprised that he looked like the typical mountain man in his flannel shirt, jeans, and work boots. One thing I learned through this whole process and that was that I had a type and it was rugged. William fit the bill perfectly.

“Hi, William.” I smiled up at him, the butterflies in my stomach even worse now. My biggest fear was that he’d take one look at me and send me back to the lower forty-eight. I wasn’t glamorous like his finance had been and I knew I could stand to lose some weight.

“Was your flight okay?” He glanced over at the pilot and I swore I saw his eyes darken with emotion for a flash second.

“Yes, it was fine.” I glanced around at all the trees and lack of buildings and took a deep breath. I could already tell the air was cleaner here and I was instantly in love with Alaska. “It’s gorgeous here. Even more than I imagined.”

William turned his attention back to me and grinned. “It most certainly is. I had the same reaction the first time I landed.” The pilot had put my suitcase next to us and closed the lower cargo area of the plane. “Is this all you have?”

I nodded and wondered if my face was getting red. It certainly felt warm all of a sudden. “Yeah, that’s it. I travel light.” I shrugged, blowing it off.

“Good. We live pretty simply here.” He picked up the suitcase easily. “My truck is over here.” He nodded to the parking lot full of trucks and chuckled. “I know, you’ll see a lot of trucks in Alaska. Mine is the red one.”

He thanked the pilot and handed him a piece of paper that looked like a check. He didn’t say anything else before leading me away from the plane and towards his truck.

As excited as I was by William’s looks, I was a little bit disappointed by our initial meeting. I had thought maybe he would at least hug me when he saw me; we were supposed to be married after all.

I had little to no self esteem, so I worried he wasn’t attracted to me and change his mind about marrying me. I tried to push the thoughts from my head and enjoy the fact that I was now in Alaska, a place I’d dreamed about since reading about it years ago in school.

William put my suitcase in the back and reached for my backpack. I handed it to him and he opened the truck door for me. It was a lifted truck and I had no idea how I was going to get into it with my short legs.

He held out a hand and gave me a crooked smile, his blue eyes twinkling in the sunlight. “Let me help.”

I laughed and took his hand. It looked so small in his and he grasped me tight. Williams' hands were rough, the nails short. They were the kind of hands that were calloused and used to hard work. For an instant I imagined how they would feel on my bare skin and dropped my eyes, hopping inside.

I could smell the newness of the truck and it had all the latest gadgets - a lot fancier than the piece of shit car my dad had and I sold for only a couple hundred dollars. One guy had even told me I should be paying him to take it away.

William got into the driver’s side and started up the truck. As he pulled out of the small parking lot, he turned off the radio.

“So, Amelia Miller, tell me more about yourself.” He glanced over at me and smiled.

I shrugged my shoulders. “There’s not much to tell. I’ve led a pretty boring life so far, I guess.”

“I see. So is that why you needed an adventure and decided to marry a man you didn’t know in a state far away from home?” I opened my mouth to protest and then I saw the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye when he pulled to stop and looked at me.

“I guess you could say that.” I licked my lips and glanced out the window. I talked to people all the time at my job as a waitress at the diner, but it was always small talk. I never opened up to anyone in my whole life, not even my dad. He was always too drunk or too high to listen anyway.

“My mom died five days after I was born. I guess she got some kind of infection. My dad’s heart broke and he spiraled into a depression. I don’t remember a time in my life when he wasn’t using drugs and alcohol to numb himself. My grandma was around until I was seven, helping him, but then she passed away. I’ve been taking care of myself ever since. Dad passed away about two months ago, leaving me with nothing. At least he’s back with my mom.” I swiped away a tear that had managed to escape. I don’t think I’d ever told anyone what I just told William.
