Megan watched her and felt compelled to ask. “Do you think there will be another one?”

“I hope not. Be careful when you run calls.”

“You don’t have to tell me twice,” Megan said with a laugh that Ash didn’t return. “Is there something else going on?”

Ash’s eyes had always been striking. A deep violet, like Elizabeth Taylor’s, her eyes were clear, perceptive, and never seemed to miss anything. Never one for makeup, Ash’s dark eyelashes naturally framed those eyes as she looked at Megan. Everything about her was natural and practical. She had short dark hair and clear, alabaster skin that was something to envy, but came with an intensity that matched her job. She chewed methodically on her sandwich, and her eyes shifted away to the table, staring at something invisible.

“So what is it?”

“I don’t know if I can tell you yet.”

Megan didn’t get offended. She knew there were things that Ash couldn’t share as part of her job. Even her anxiety didn’t question that and besides, sometimes it was bliss to be ignorant. Still, she wanted more.

“Is it bad?”

Ash tilted her head to the side. “Not sure.”

“Is it a today problem?”

“No. I don’t think so.”

“Will it change anything?”

Ash hesitated and thought for a moment, her usual clue that Megan had hit on something in their familiar game. “No, I don’t think so.”

“Can you do anything about it?”

Ash shook her head again, this time almost immediately.

“You always tell me that’s the one to focus on.”

“True. I’m glad you’ve been listening.”

“I always do.”

They chatted more about everything that had happened recently. One of Ash’s siblings was going to be graduating from college to become a home economics teacher, so she was planning to take some time off for a visit back to the homestead. In other news, her parents had recently started raising goats to start a goat yoga farm and had been begging her to come home for a while.

“That sounds right up your alley.”

“Yeah, we’ll see. Mom saw it on Instagram and heard about it from one of her trips to the Ashram. Let me guess, now because there’s animals you want in?” Ash asked.

“Maybe.”

“What does lover boy think about animals?”

“He was cool with the cats and birds. I think he even said hi to Leo.”

Ash smiled more and crumpled up the wrapping from her fancy-ass sandwich.

“You know, I’m glad you found him. I think he’s good for you.”

Megan smiled and felt her phone buzz in her pocket. Ash heard it too and nodded for her to check, laughing when she saw the name.

“Right on cue. I think he misses you.”

CHAPTER26

Troy smiled as he slid the phone in his pocket. Texting with Megan grounded him and kept him smiling as he worked to install new kitchen cabinets. It wasn’t the install itself but the leveling that was going to drive him crazy. He knew he could be a perfectionist, but his dad treated that bubble in the level lines like it was the eye of God and turned perfection into an art form. It was particularly impressive considering there wasn’t one plumb wall in what could be saved from the salvaged farmhouse.
