“Weaker?”

“You know what I mean. It’s nature—”

“I’m sorry. Who’s the one that ran into your dad’s house?”

Troy turned slowly, wiping his hands with the dishtowel, his stormy expression at odds with the cheerful floral pattern in his hands.

“You know what I meant. Besides, you said yourself that you have backup at all times.”

“If you think I can run through fire because I have a man behind me, you couldn’t be more wrong.”

“So you’d run into fire without a team? That’s crazy.”

“So you think I’m crazy now?” Megan could feel her voice rising and rose out of her chair with it.

“I didn’t say you’re crazy, but willfully putting yourself in danger is fucking nuts.”

Megan ground out her answer through gritted teeth, fueled with rage on every level. “That’s. What. I. Do.It’s my job.”

He threw the towel in the empty sink and propped his hands on his hips.“Are you saying you’re better than me?”

Megan’s head almost snapped back from the shock. “What the hell does that mean? All I’m saying is I’m a firefighter.”

“And someone who rescued my dad. I bet you love to lord that shit around.”

“It’s a fucking fact! I’ll say it again. It’s my job!”

“And you think it makes you better than me!” His face was red again, and she could see the muscles in his jaw working as he folded his arms and stood his ground. God, the thought that she had clung to him last night made her eyes sting with anger and frustration and not just at him.

“This has literally nothing to do with you.”

“Oh, come the fuck on. Lighting the candle like some badass and putting out the flame with your fingers. It’s not a fucking game to me! My friend died in a fire, and my shoulder is all fucked up because of it. Got it?!”

Megan could see him starting to shake again, trying to hold himself and his emotions together. As much as she hated what was happening between them, she didn’t want him to suffer. Megan blew out a breath and tried to collect herself.

“Troy—”

“Don’t spout off some bullshit to me. I’ve heard it all, and it’s all a worthless fucking lie.”

“I can’t get burned.”

He smirked and sucked his teeth. “What the fuck does that mean? Trying to rub shit in my face?”

“No.” Megan swallowed and closed her eyes for a moment to steady herself. “I legit cannot get burned. That’s how I survived.”

“That’s insane.”

Megan glared at him. “That’s the truth. You could set this whole place on fire, and it won’t hurt my skin. The smoke irritates my lungs, but that’s it. How do you think I got Levi out? Pets don’t like the helmets. I had to take it off, and my gloves too. I could walk in there stark naked and be fine.”

“And this is supposed to make me feel better? That youallegedlycan’t get burned?”

“I can’t.”

“And I’m the one who can. I’m the weak one?!”

“You think you know everything, but you don’t have a damn clue! I’m stronger than you think!”

“And what about the rest of the team? Do they know? What about them? What if the building goes down because you’re too cocky and stay in too long? What if someone follows you? Then what, huh? What if one day you think you can’t get burned, and then surprise! You die.” He waved his hands around, mocking her.
