“Yes,” Charlotte said. “That is why I have been so tired. The doctor tells me that it is quite natural.”

John felt his chest swell with pride. “I am going to be a father,” he repeated.

“My first grandchild,” said his mother.

“The first of many, I hope,” Charlotte said, laying a hand over her still flat abdomen. “I long to have a house filled with the laughter of children.”

“Whatever, you want,ma Belle,” John said. “Whatever you wish.”

“Right now, I feel much revived,” Charlotte said, swinging her legs out of the sick bed. “And I am desperate to go to Kennett Park and tell my mother and sisters the good news.”

“I shall tell Carlton to ready the carriage,” John said firmly. “I shall not have you falling from a horse.”

Charlotte nodded slyly. If she was going to have to endure her husband’s overeager pampering over the next few months, she was going to enjoy every minute.
