I nod my head and cross my arms over my chest.

“Let’s just say, Jax gave me a little bonus.”

“Something we have to pay back?”

“Nope. Now stop worrying and let’s get going,” he answers and then trails off.

I meet him downstairs a few minutes later and we hop in his truck, turning the music wide open.

I think I should feel sad like I've just lost something, but I don't think there was anything left for me in Cane Bay…besides Alyssa. We needed this chance and I decided I was going to go with it.

We parallel park in front of a row of stores on Main street and I see a little boutique, a café, and a home décor store.

I scan the street, "Um…I think we're lost, Danny."

“No we’re not, we’re here.”

"At this place?" my jaw drops as I follow him out of the truck. I look up and down the street and see cars lining the road in a lot better shape than ours. Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Cadillac, and more surround us and my cheeks flush as he pulls the door of the store open for me.

Two store clerks, dressed in clothes that make mine look like they were pulled from the dumpster greet us, "You must be Chalene,” one of them takes my hands and I look at Danny confused.

He just smiles and shrugs.

“Come this way, we have some selections pulled for you already.”

“You do?

I'm dragged to the back corner of the little store where there's a mirror and two dressing rooms along with a couple of chairs. The other clerk rolls back a rack full of clothes and then brings back another.

I stare at them dumbfounded.

“Well go on,” the woman’s voice is soft and sweet and I’m grateful for that.

She starts shuffling the clothes around on the rack, “how do you like pink?”

“It's '…alright, I guess."

“Blue? Leather?”

I hear a low chuckle behind me and when I turn around Danny is perched on the wall, arms crossed and having a blast watching me.

He pushes his hand in the air, “Go on kiddo. You deserve this.”

I look at him for a long moment and my stomach flutters. I love my brother so much. He’s always been so good to me and tears well in my eyes a bit.

“Go on,” he nudges again.

I swallow the tears and turn around to join the women.

They help me try on an assortment of dresses, slacks, khakis, shirts, you name it and then they tell me to pick what I want.

I look carefully at all the wonderful pieces I love so much and then pull one outfit over my arm, then a second, then a third, and the khakis that we came for too.

I turn and face them, “Okay, I’ve got it.”

“Oh honey, that can’t be all.”

I sigh proudly, “It is, we don’t need to spend that much money. I’m sorry and very grateful for all your help.”
