“I’m still not sure about this father. They think they have us by the balls.”

"Let them think it, son," he comes and places his large dated hand on my shoulder. "When they miss a step, we will be ready, already having a plan in place. When they are weak, we will strike…like vipers!" his hand snaps in our faces imitating a snake bite and we jump, laughing deeply under our breaths.

“Speaking of weaknesses, I should probably let you know that Danny and his sister are staying with me for a few weeks.”

“Oh?”

I nod, “It was necessary.”

The old man grins at my conundrum to his earlier comment.

“Danny…” he hums, “the one that’s been making the runs for us on the North side?

I nod again.

“Jax, that’s not good.”

“I know, I know” I hold my hands out in the air. “Like I said it was necessary and it’s temporary.”

My father pours another shot of the fine brown liquid into his glass at the bar, "make sure it goes unnoticed. Cease all runs together while he is there with you. Make sure everything looks separate."

I nod.

Chapter 8

Chalene

It felt like a million years had been wrapped up in the past two days. I think it was the gravity of the whole situation. Losing one home, gaining another temporary home, and having to live with a man that made me question my virtue.

There’s something so mysterious about Jax and I can’t put my finger on what. All I know is that when he looks at me like that my whole body comes alive and the whole thing scares me. I’m scared that I won’t ever look at another man the way I look at him but most of all I’m scared that I won’t want to leave.

“You gonna be ready soon kiddo?”

I nod and smile as he finds my doorway while I brush my hair.

“Is Jax here?”

“Nope, he left early to stop by the golf course and then see his dad.”

“Oh ok.”

“So where are we going again?”

“Shopping.”

“You do know it’s Sunday, don’t you? And nothing in South Carolina opens before noon on a Sunday.”

“Well lucky for you we slept in,” he nods towards the clock on my nightstand and I turn gasping at the time. I’m making a bad habit of sleeping in.

“Okay well we still have a problem though…” his eyes widen questioning me.

“Shop with what money?”

“I’ve got it, don’t worry about it.”

“Danny, really…how are we going to afford new clothes? I don’t want to dip into our savings. We don’t have very long here and need every penny,” I give him a long inquiring stare and he finally gives in.

“Jesus kiddo, fine I’ll tell you. But only because I can tell you won’t stop until I do.”
