I growl, “what’ll it be?” the corner of his mouth has a slight uptick as he grins so sexily and I nervously tuck a lock of my red hair behind my ear

“Red looks good on you,” I don’t know what to say so I don’t, I just wait for his order.

“Jack and coke,” he finally huffs out.

I want to ignore the emotions rising from the flashes of memories…like of that kiss…but seeing him opens the flood gates. I bite my bottom lip tasting that kiss again, and slide his drink in front of him and a beautiful blonde slips next to him breaking my haze.

Her hand creeps up his shoulder and then she looks at me. Our blues eyes meet and I remember her. How could I forget that face? Alessandra is just as beautiful as I remember. She glances at me but she doesn’t scrunch her face like she used to.

Her fingers proceed to run along the collar of his white button up straightening it and I can tell he wasn’t expecting her company. He gently pulls her hand down, glancing at me and I snap away making someone else’s drink.

I pretend not to notice them, but I can’t help it. He may look surprised but I’m not. Danny once told me Jax and her were just friends, and Jax would probably agree, but I wasn’t so sure she wouldn’t. I was sure Jax had a lot offriends.

His broad shoulders strain the fabric of his shirt as he grabs the glass and gulps it down, “Alessanda, what are you doing here?”

“I haven’t seen you in a few weeks,” her finger traces his jawline and moves down his neck and I watch as his adam’s apple bob seductively. My eyes follow her hand as it drifts down his neck and to his chest and I can’t help but notice the open area where his shirt is unbuttoned.

Alessandra clears her throat and my eyes jerk to hers. She’s telling me she sees me…and to back off. Not that it would ever matter. I’m not the kind of girl Jax Astor would ever notice like that. I’m firefly…his friend’s little sister that he once saved and gave hope to and then took it all away. The one he has pity for now and is constantly seeking redemption from.

I gain some distance and get back to work refilling another patron and cleaning glasses and Jax waves me down again. I’m pretty sure he’s trying to torture me, because he knows I don’t want to talk to him, and that he could get another bartender, but he waits for me anyways.

I nod and step towards him awaiting his request.

“Another round…and whatever she wants,” he points to Alessandra looking unamused with her company.

“Whiskey sour,” she calls out and I nod, catching his eyes blazing into me again.

Why does he stare at me like that? It’s that same stare…

What are those eyes saying? Hunger? Disgust? Guilt? I could never figure it out and I still can’t.

Luckily a customer from the other side of the bar waves me down while Megan is gone and when she comes back, she ends up on my side.

It doesn’t help though. Like a moth to a flame, I’m programmed to catch glimpses of him, catch his pristine clothes out of the corner of my eye as he moves away from the bar. Alessandra is pulling his hand, leading him to the dance floor and a glass crashes behind me making me realize I’m staring again.

I migrate to the spill that needs cleaning and keep myself busy, but when I look up again, somehow my eyes find his and they are fixated on me…while he’s dancing with her. His body is moving, gyrating, owning her, but his eyes are on me…again.

Chapter 17

Chalene

His eyes…those eyes…they hold so much power over me. They always have and they always will.

Flutters swirl through me but this time they piss me off. I swear it’s like Jax wants me to see him with these girls. He always has. But why? What would he have to gain?

Up until two weeks ago, I hadn’t seen him in almost two years. And our last encounter before that was not one I like to remember. He was begging me to let him help, give me money, a car, a house, anything. But, the cure to the pain couldn’t be bought. I don’t really think he meant it that way, I just don’t think he had anything else to give. It was obvious Jax didn’t know how to give much of his heart.

Luckily, he doesn’t come back anytime soon and I get some peace at the bar. That is until...

What is it with me and crazy eyed weirdos?

“Chalene! Chalene!”

I hear his creaky voice coming at me through the crowd and I sigh. I turn to Megan, “Incoming,” and roll my eyes.

Kyle was my first and only tinder date. Tinder gone wrong.

“Go home Kyle,” I command as he makes it to the bar with a huge smile.
