He grunts through another puff, “well we’re going to have to handle this.” He lets out a sigh as he thinks, “I’ll arrange a meeting with Richard Compano. See if he’ll talk, come to an…understanding…a resolution. If we don’t stop this now, the whole city will end up burned in the wake of our war.”

I nod and stand back up. I don’t want to be away from my firefly for too long and I still need to stop by the clubhouse.

“Let me know when and where,” my jaw naturally clenches not looking forward to the coming meeting. They could end up arriving ready for war, unwilling to listen. They already sent someone to my house to send a message and I got it loud and clear.

Henry has the door opened for me as I get to the car, “where to sir?”

“The golf course Henry. Quickly though. I don’t want to be there long.”

He chuckles a bit, “Jerry is taking good care of her sir.”

My teeth clench again thinking of anyone being near her, caring for her besides me. I should be there, I should be the one looking after her, but for now, this is the best way I can. It’s not safe out here…with me.

This will be our life…

We get to the clubhouse in record time and I waste no time heading straight to my office, gathering the documents I need. We’ll need these to show the Compano’s if they accept the meeting. If they don’t accept…then God help all of our rotten souls.

As long as they don’t get to her…

I’ll need to devise a plan, a get away just for her. If something happens to me, I need to know that she will have gotten out and far away…on the other side of the planet…where no one will find her, touch her, hurt her. She’ll have everything she could ever want for.

The thought draws a terrible sigh from deep within as I exit the car and head to speak with the grounds manager. I need to tell him I’ll be in a lot less for the foreseeable future.

My phone rings on the way and I smile when I see who it is. I press the phone to my ear, “Firefly.”

“You didn’t have to honey. You’ve barely been gone a couple hours.”

“What do you mean,” just hearing her voice makes me smile as I enter the main Golf house.

“The flowers. I love them.”

I stop, “what flowers my love?”

The flowers you had delivered. They’re beautiful. Jerry must have unlocked the door since he let the delivery in.”

My body tightens. Something isn’t right. The world around me goes quiet.

“You shouldn’t be outside firefly. You need to go back in right now.”

She giggles a bit, “Okay, okay, you’re the one who sent the flowers. I thought you’d be happy I got them.”

My mind is racing, pivoting, screaming from the inside. I didn’t send flowers.

I need to get Jerry on the phone. I snap at the attendant at the cash register and mouth for them to get a phone.

“Oh wait…are you here? I hear you.”

“Chalene, I’m not there. Chalene!”

A thump and then silence crashes through the phone and my whole body explodes with angst. I turn to the door, the whole world moving in slow motion as I run to the SUV yelling at Henry, “We have to get home now! Jerry! Call Jerry!”
