They both nod, Henry pulling out his phone and making a call as they exit the house.

I land on the couch pulling my knees to my chest, “I want to go with you tomorrow. I can’t stand the idea of something happening to you. If something happened-“

“You need to stay here. It’s safer here with Jerry, in one place.

“Why because you can lock me in the house again?”

“Because I can lock them out…” he sighs, “Look, your brother already lost his life because of me. I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you,” he wraps his arms tight around me pulling me close and kissing my forehead.

Chapter 24

Jax

Henry opens the door of my SUV and I nod at my father’s guard as I climb the steps to his house.

“Good morning Mr. Astor,” he moves to the door before I get there and opens it for me.

“Good morning David.”

The house is busy as I stop inside and see the maids cleaning the already spotless house. My father is a beast and likes everything polished and dusted once a week. I suppose it’s his great attention to detail that’s gotten him this far. A quality I’d like to pride myself in.

The sunlight shines in the many windows lighting up the foyer and my father emerges from the double doors of the study as the front door closes behind me.

“Son.”

“Father.”

He turns and heads back in the large room and I follow shutting the doors behind me.

“The Compano’s are not happy with our arrangement anymore,” he gets right into business.

“So I was right, that was them last night. Sending a message?”

The deep lines in his forehead scrunch together even more as he nods. They think we’re cutting the cocaine, selling the extra and keeping the profits for ourselves.

“That’s bullshit. Why?”

“The shipment was short some containers last month, cutting our profits. They think there’s more to it. They think we’re shorting them.”

“So there’s no stopping this now?”

“I thought so, until you called me last night.” His hands slide in his black slacks.

“It appears we’ve received a warning.”

I sit in the oversized leather chair behind me letting out a sigh, “there’s one other thing.”

My father’s dark eyes squint, “yes?”

“It’s Chalene. We’re together.”

The old man reaches into his cigar box next to him on the long desk and puts it in his mouth puffing, “It’s about time.”

My face contorts in a tilt. I should have known he knew.

A laugh erupts from his belly, “don’t look at me like that. I’m not stupid. You’ve been after her since the day you met her…following her, having our men follow her,” he throws his hand around in dissatisfaction. “Maybe now, they can focus more on the real work.”

I feel a slight uptick on my lips and then I remember what I came for, “yes well, someone has been following her the past few weeks.” I lean back in the chair propping a leg on my knee and his eyes glare at me concerned. “They left a note on her car after work about a week ago. I didn’t initially think the two situations were related but then I remembered Danny. That thing last night…it felt personal…not just about her.”
