“What are you laughing at?”

“You see this stomach, right?” I pointed at my big round tummy.

Kace just raised his eyebrows. It was a look that said, ‘No duh.’

“So I haven’t had the baby yet but you called me Little Momma.”

“You’re still a mother even if the baby hasn’t exited your belly yet.”

This time, loud, boisterous laughter escaped me and I forgot the company I was in when I said, “I’m going to pee my pants.”

And pee them I almost did when I saw the shocked look on Kace’s face. He jumped up, pushing the lever to put the footstool down on the recliner.

“Let’s go before I find myself cleaning a puddle on the floor. We might have to invest in puppy training pads to keep you from ruining the floor.”

Oh boy, I may actually do it if he doesn’t stop. When Gemma told me before he could be fun and silly I hadn’t believed her. But that side of him was something I had seen all day since arriving at my place. He joked with the kids, flirted with the ladies just to rile his friends, and even teased me some as he'd just done.

“You’re a funny guy,” I told him as I tried pushing myself out of the chair. It was a lot easier getting in than out, that was for sure.

“Want some help?” Kace asked, clearly being careful not to just reach out and touch me.

“Sure.” Another shocked look crossed his face at my agreement. I was surprised too, but I seriously needed to get to the bathroom.

Wrapping his arm under mine, he heaved me out of the chair. I was about to head down the hall but turned to look at Kace, another question on my mind.

“Why the little part?”

“Because you’re a tiny thing,” he told me.

“I’m not that tiny, you’re just big.” He was too. Kace was tall and muscular. So yeah, next to me I probably seemed that way.

Without waiting for a response I took off toward the bathroom to do my business because it would be quite embarrassing if I actually peed my pants.

When I came back out, Kace was standing by the door. A pang of disappointment hit me knowing he was about to leave. It was nice having people around. Even Kace. He’d been a lifesaver that day.

“I should get going and let you settle in,” he said as he grabbed the knob and pulled open the front door.

A look of unease stretched across my face and Kace noticed.

“Teal, I’m right down the hall. You need anything you can call me anytime, okay?”

“Okay,” I said softly.

“I mean it. Don’t hesitate, just call. And lock up right after I leave.”

I nodded my head in agreement and he hesitated for a second, but then he was gone.

As soon as the door closed, I locked it, engaging the deadbolt, and then turned around with my back to the dark wood. I’d been alone in the motel, but this felt different after having everyone here today.

It seemedlonelier.

But this was my place and I could have them back any time I wanted.

They were my friends.
