Everything she was saying sounded right and made sense. If I talked to my parents both me and them would have her to thank for that someday. But I think she was missing the one thing that had truly started my healing process.

Her.

“I will think about it. Thank you for listening.”

“You’re welcome. You have been there for me and I will be there for you. That’s what friends do, right?” Her eyes sparkled awaiting my reply.

And then her mouth dropped open when I did.

“My healing started when you walked into my life. And as for friends, we’ll start there. But honey, I think we are both beginning to realize there is so much more headed our way.”

Her hand dropped from my cheek as a stunned expression crossed her face.

“Kace?” she whispered, a question in her tone.

“No hurry, sweetheart. We’ll get there one day.”

A soft smile lit up her face and I returned one of my own.

I couldn’t wait, but I knew if I had to, I’d wait forever for her.

ChapterTwenty-Two

TEAL

Home sweet home.

Everything had gone well and we had gotten discharged after day two in the hospital. Kace had been amazing and never left except to go down to the cafeteria here and there. I was shocked that he changed his work schedule around for us and had taken a few days off.

It was going to be hard when he wasn’t around all the time.

I hadn’t seen anyone else since that first day at the hospital but when we had gotten home, that all changed. There was a surprise welcome home party going on in my house. Even though I was tired when I walked in and found everyone there, I was touched.

Once again my place had been filled to the brim with people.

“Auntie Teal!” Embry shouted before I barely crossed the threshold leading into my place. “Can I babysit?” She jumped up and down with her usual enthusiasm while my heart warmed at her calling me Auntie.

And then my body practically caught fire when Kace’s large palm splayed across my lower back as he whispered in my ear, which then caused me to practically go up in smoke. “You okay, sweetheart?” His warm breath tickled and I had a thought that I probably shouldn’t be having.

I could get used to this.

Jurnee walked up to grab her daughter with an apologetic look on her face as she ushered her away and I turned toward Kace. The action had our faces mere inches apart and my breath caught in my throat.

The intense feeling of wanting to throw caution to the wind and kiss him was crazy. Then, Denver let out a small cry as he started to wake, breaking the moment. But not before I saw the searing look in his eyes.

I think the feeling was mutual.

Why did that notion make me so happy when I was not free to do what I wished and also was scared to death of the feeling he brought out when I had never been able to trust a man in my life?

Yet I trusted Kace.

But I wasn’t sure I’d ever let my guard down with my body and he was a man who deserved someone whole, one who gave him everything. Especially after Bridgette. My emotions were all over the place yet one thing I was pretty sure of.

It might kill me to watch him find his happily-ever-after with someone else.

“Hey,” he said softly. I realized I hadn’t answered him and the baby was letting out another whimper. “You look tired, let me take the baby and you go sit down.”

He’d held Denver many times at the hospital and every time the sight of it made me want everything with Kace. It was hard to admit even to myself but I’d fallen asleep and dreamt of walking down the aisle toward him, the house with the white picket fence and more kids.
