The morning had goneby in a blur.

Zander and I had gotten dressed before running out to find a store where we could buy a few more clothing items for the two of us and some things for the room Zander was using so it felt more like his and for a boy his age. I am sure I could have called one of the ladies to ask where to find the stores needed, but I didn’t want to bother them. We managed to find a Target and also grabbed some lunch at a Red Robin while out and about.

Just as we walked back in the door from our outing, my phone alerted me to a text from Summer asking if we’d like to come over so the boys could play and have dinner. I knew I’d come to get away from everything back where I’d lived and hoped Gyth could somehow help me if it came down to me needing it, but I wasn’t sure I had been thinking clearly.

And now that I found Rowan was in the same place, thinking was even harder.

However, my biggest reason for coming was for my son and I knew that playing with his new friend would make him happy. That was all I needed to know to give her my answer.

I fired off a quick text to tell Summer yes, ask what time, and check on what I could bring.

My nerves got the best of me as we walked up to her door, but I pushed them down. This was for Zander, who held one hand and in the other, I was armed with a container of cookies. Summer had told me not to bring anything, but I couldn’t very well go without something.

Zander dropped my hand and very enthusiastically knocked on the door, before hitting the doorbell way too many times.

I was about to tell him that it was rude when the door swung open and Summer and her son Dexter were standing there. It took about two seconds before Dexter and Zander were off to play. Giving a small shrug and a laugh, I held out the cookies.

“Come in,” Summer said as she took them from me, opening the lid and peeking inside. “Thank you, but you didn’t have to bring cookies.”

A deep voice interrupted before I could reply.

“Sunshine, did you say cookies?”

Gyth came up behind his wife and peered over her shoulder. “Yes, I did. Take them in the kitchen and don’t eat them all before dinner,” she told him, handing him the container.

“Aww, are you worried I will spoil my meal?”

“Smartass.” She smacked him on the ass as he walked away.

“Hi, Brinley. Thanks for the cookies!” he yelled over his shoulder.

Laughing, I replied with a hello and then looked at Summer. Her eyes sparkled with love and humor.

“What do you want to bet they are gone before the night is over?”

Maybe the evening wouldn’t be so bad. I may have had some anxiety around going over there, but the couple was a hoot.

The laughter they brought may be just what I needed.

ChapterTen

ROWAN

I just wanteda glimpse of her.

A week had gone by and I knew she’d been carefully avoiding me. While I didn’t want to push, I had wanted to see her and make sure she and Zander were okay. It hadn’t happened though and I needed to find a way to rectify that.

I knew anyone, including her, who knew the way I’d behaved wouldn’t understand why now after all that time I cared.

I’d never stop caring. It was because I cared so deeply that I had to run before.

But I never forgot anything about Brinley.

The way she smelled, how beautiful she was, her sweetness, and the way she…

I groaned, shoving the last thought away. It just might be the death of me.
