Hearing him say no matter what he was still going to be there for Zander was amazing. And I would get to go on my first true date.
With Rowan.
“Okay, yes.”
The smile that stretched across his face blew me away. But then something crossed my mind.
“What about Zander? How can we go out when someone is sending you notes? I can’t let anything happen to our son.”
His thumb circled on the top of my hand, soothing away the worry that was racing through every cell in my body.
“Honey, I work with some badass men. He will be well protected at Gyth and Summer’s place. I will ask them myself. And I will be with you.” Keeping hold of the hand on his chest, he let go of my other and cupped my cheek in his palm. “I get this may not be the best time when we just found this note, but I don’t want to miss out on making any more memories with you, Buttercup.”
I turned my cheek further into his palm and soaked up the moment. It felt insane. I should have been scared about the letter, which I was, but this chance was a once in a lifetime for me.
Because Rowan was always it for me. Always had been. There had never been anyone else and I never thought there ever would be.
I just never imagined I’d have him.
As long as Zander was safe, I was taking my shot.
Rowan leaned over and kissed my temple. “I know I already said this, but I’m going to protect you and Zander. I promise.” He gave me a little tug and tucked me under his arm so I was plastered to his side. Resting his chin on the top of my head, he sighed.
I mimicked the sound with a sigh of my own, feeling safe and warm in his embrace.
And that’s how our son found us the next morning.
ChapterTwenty-Three
ROWAN
“Daddy!”
My eyes popped open when Zander yelled. I was able to move the warm, sexy woman from my arms a second before my son landed on my stomach like it was a pool and he was doing his best version of a cannonball.
“You and Mommy had a sleepover,” he said, giggling.
His face inches from mine and blond hair in disarray, he grabbed my cheeks and smashed them in his palms.
“That’s not fair. I want to have a sleepover with you too,” he whined.
A cute, sleepy groan from beside us had Zander and me looking over at Brin. Her arms went up in the air as she stretched and a monstrous yawn escaped her. My son and I both laughed. Then my eyes seemed to catch and be transfixed on her pink-tinted, bow-shaped lips that I craved to kiss.
“Mommy always sounds like a bear in the morning.” Zander’s humorous voice stopped my thoughts from tumbling to a place they shouldn’t be going with him in the room.
“I heard that,” Brin mumbled and Zander giggled again.
Well aware that it was an accident that she and I had fallen asleep together, and unsure if I would ever have this moment again, I soaked it all in. I pulled Zander closer to my chest with one arm and Brin into my side with the other, giving them both a squeeze.
Then I launched a tickle war and all hell broke loose.
Zander kicked and screamed with glee, while Brin fought hard to set herself free from my embrace. She was ticklish everywhere. A memory from our past came back to me.
We’d been picking out a movie to watch one evening as we waited for Luke to get to my house with food and Brin had said something sarcastic. Knowing she was extremely ticklish, I set forth to get her good and tickled her everywhere. We ended up off the couch and onto the floor where I hovered over her as she cried out mercy.
When I finally stopped I became aware I was straddling her middle, our cores touching, and looked down into her mesmerizing blue eyes that shimmered with desire.
Brin lifted her hips, pressing up into me even more, and the bulge in my pants grew like a weed on speed. A groan erupted from deep in my soul just as Luke walked in waving the bags of cheeseburgers he had picked up from our favorite diner in the air. I’d jumped off Brin making some comment about her smart mouth and how she deserved her tickle torture before heading to the bathroom to get myself under control.
