That was when I was sure there was something between her and me that went beyond friendship. But I never acted on those feelings until that fateful day I came home to bury my mother.

Had that been a mistake?

Even though I felt like I screwed up and I missed out on time with Brinley, I also couldn't help but feel like if we’d gotten together earlier on, then we wouldn’t have what we had now.

Zander.

And while I’d only had a very short time with him, I couldn’t imagine life without him.

“Earth to, Daddy? Can I have my other present now?”

We’d told Zander we had another gift for him when we got home the night before, but he’d fallen asleep. Apparently, he hadn’t forgotten about the present.

“Brin?” I raised my eyebrows in question.

It was her house. Plus she and Zander may have had plans, or a routine, so it was only right I asked.

“Sounds good to me as long as we can get some breakfast right after because I woke up hungry.” She smiled at the same time as her stomach growled and we all broke into laughter again.

I could get used to this.

As inforever.

“Yay, where is the present?” Zander dug his knee into my stomach as he used it as leverage to push himself backward off me.

My son bounced around like a superball that was out of control. “Does he have Red Bulls stashed under his bed he drinks before he comes out of his room in the morning?” I asked Brinley, pointing to Zander.

Her soft chuckle was adorable and the sound swept through every cell in my body, lighting a flame of desire that needed to be extinguished before I had to explain the growing hard-on pressing against the zipper of my jeans.

Damn, everything about the woman that was next to me turned me on. Had it always been that way and I was just better at ignoring it?

I realized the answer was yes. Brin had knocked me for a loop from the moment I’d met her and I’d always been hers even if I never could admit it. That didn’t seem to be a problem now though.

I was happy to shout it from the rooftops and make a fool of myself letting anyone know she belonged to me.

“Daddy, come on,” Zander pleaded. He grabbed my hand and pulled, grunting in the process of trying to pull me to my feet.

Playing along, I acted as if he was managing to drag me up. “You are so strong,” I told him and a huge grin spread across his face.

I turned and snatched Brin’s hand on my way, making her stand at the same time. When she smiled, I couldn’t help myself. I leaned over and whispered, “You make it hard to concentrate on anything else.” I placed a quick kiss on those perfect lips. Our son didn’t miss it.

A dramatic gasp slipped from his mouth and I looked over to see his eyes bugging out of his head. “You kissed her,” he whispered as if it was a secret. It was hilarious and adorable all rolled into one.

“Is that okay?” I asked him.

He was nodding his head vigorously and when I looked back at Brin, she looked skeptical and nervous.

“He’s okay, Buttercup. Look at him for yourself.”

She glanced at our son who was smiling like a loon and the hesitant look left her face.

“Why is she a Buttercup, Daddy? That’s a candy,” he stated matter-of-factly.

Brin’s face flamed red and I knew I was in deep shit if we didn’t get on with the present part of the morning. Because I had a feeling she would be sweeter than the candy and I was dying to get a taste.

“Let’s go check out your gift.” Hands still all clasped together I veered the three of us down the hall until we got to the bedroom that used to be a nursery.

“I thought we couldn’t go in here?” Zander said.
