“How about this? We go to get some breakfast, then I’ll drop you two back here to get ready while I go meet with the guys, and as soon as I’m done, I will come back to pick you up so we can go to the zoo?”

Besides the party the evening before, it would be the first big family outing with just the three of us. I knew how Zander felt about it since he was jumping up and down, as usual, begging his mother to say yes.

“We could do that,” she said.

“Yay! I’ll go get dressed.” Zander was off with lightning speed to the other room.

“I almost forgot for a minute,” Brin said quietly.

It killed me that she had to think about it at all. Turning to her, I lifted her chin with my fingers and looked into her crystal blue eyes. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I told you last night, but I’m going to figure this out.”

When I dropped my hand from her face, she nodded and then changed the subject, making it clear she didn’t want to think about it anymore right then.

“Do you seriously want to have a sleepover here?” she asked.

“Of course I do. Are you worried about staying over with the girls still?”

Brin bit her bottom lip as she paused for a minute before saying, “A little I suppose. I’ve never done sleepovers.”

“I beg to differ. Me, Luke, and you had sleepovers all the time.” All innocent, except for the one time I’d thought about earlier. However, there was nothing innocent about the things I’d like to do with Brin if she agreed to what was brewing in my head.

“That was different.” Brin glanced down at the floor.

“How about after our date we practice having a sleepover?”

Brin’s head popped up so fast I would be shocked if she didn’t have whiplash. Her eyes mimicked her son’s from earlier and were bugging out. With a red face and shocked look, she said, “That wouldn’t be even close to the same thing.”

Smirking, I leaned in and gave her another quick kiss. Leaning back, I gazed into her eyes. “Exactly. If you can get through our sleepover, you can make it through any others.”

She gasped, but interest shined in her gaze.

I wiggled my eyebrow suggestively and she laughed, playfully swatting my arm.

“Mmph. Men,” she murmured.

Grabbing her hand, I pulled her toward the doorway so I could feed her and Zander.

“I think you’ll like what I have in store for you during our sleepover, Buttercup.”

I was going to arrange that pronto.

ChapterTwenty-Four

BRIN

Why hadI declined to go shopping?

The girls tried coaxing me into going out during the following week to pick up something new to wear for my date with Rowan, who’d wasted no time getting it planned after asking me out.

We’d been busy with our trip to the zoo which went fabulously well and had been a lot of fun. I was apprehensive at first about us all going together as a family, but I’d worried for nothing. At least not as far as the outing went. Rowan was fun, carefree, and attentive to Zander, along with me the whole time. I suppose it was as if I was always waiting for something to go wrong or for things to change, even though they seem to be progressing instead.

Then during the week, we had Zander’s actual birthday to celebrate, which we’d done with just the three of us also, and besides Rowan's work, I was also busy doing some work for Alley. So in the end I said that I was good with what I had. But I was second-guessing that decision as I threw what minimal clothes I had all over my room.

A frustrated sigh escaped me as I threw myself backward on my bed. Flat on my back, my legs dangling over the side, I willed something magnificent to magically appear that would be suitable for a first date.

It was the beginning of October so not too cold yet, but the summer heat had tapered off. I also wasn’t sure where we were going and was told to dress in whatever made me happy. Rowan’s words were, ‘Anything you wear will look spectacular on and off you, Buttercup.’ Thinking about it as I lay there, my body temperature rose, just as it had when he said it.

I had a feeling that Rowan was going to succeed in charming my panties right off me as the evening progressed.
