What the hell was wrong with me?

“You’re funny,” I told him, my words muffled with my face still pressed against his massive chest.

Rowan moved his hands to my shoulders and gently pushed back, looking me straight in the eyes. “I’m serious, Buttercup. Everything about you appeals to me and if we don’t get the show on the road I’m going to show you just how much.”

Goosebumps broke across every inch of my body.

“Would that be such a bad thing?”

My mouth blurted out my thoughts before my brain got the memo to keep my trap shut. As I had said, obviously I was not in control.

“Trust me, sweetheart, I would like nothing more than to strip you bare and have my way with you while I explore every inch of your amazing body, but you got all dressed up and it’s way past time I take you out on a date.”

I guess the outfit I borrowed from Summer was working and Rowan hadn’t even seen the gift the girls bought me that was underneath the flowy, flowered dress, jean jacket, and brown cowgirl boots.

“You might change your mind if you saw what was under my clothes.”

With a sexy grin and his signature wink, he replied, “We will get there.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door that had been open the whole time.

I grabbed my purse on the hook by the threshold as we walked out and then my heart fluttered with warmth when he spoke again.

“How was Zander when he left? Do Summer and Gyth know to call us if he needs us to come to get him?”

Summer had left with the boys just before it was time for Rowan to show up. Zander was a little disappointed he wasn’t going to see his dad before heading out but was also stoked about spending the night with his friend. And while he was excited to go, he’d never stayed at other people’s homes overnight so I wasn’t sure how it would go.

It was sweet and an eyeopener into how much Rowan had grown to love our son when he’d offered to end the date if we needed to get him.

Even if it meant he wouldn’t be getting any.

I tried to tell myself before we left that I wasn’t sure what would happen when it came to the end of the night, but after the start we’d had, I knew exactly how I wanted the date to end. And there was no question in my mind about what Rowan wanted.

“They do know. Thank you for caring.” It was probably an odd thing to say when he’d been showing me how much Zander meant to him since he’d found out he had a son. Well, shortly after. He had to get over the initial shock first, but that only lasted a matter of hours. Then he’d been amazing.

“I care a lot,” he said, turning his head in my direction as we walked hand and hand toward his truck.

I gave him a megawatt smile.

“Aboutbothof you,” he added.

My stomach fluttered and my heart beat faster as his words sunk deep inside.

Were dates always that memorable?

It was perfect.

I didn’t have anything to go off of since I’d never been on a date before. I mean Luke had taken me out all the time, but that was two best friends hanging out. Him trying to do nice things for me.

Going out with Rowan, sparks flying between us the whole time, was a completely different feeling. And I was sure it wouldn’t feel the same with anyone else. Rowan had told me that he should have taken me on a date when we were teenagers and so we were going on one that normal teenagers would. First, we had dinner at a Mexican restaurant that sat on the edge of the Columbia River. We ate delicious food on the heated patio, talking and laughing the whole time.

Then, he took me to the movies where he bought me popcorn, proceeded to play coy, and wrapped his arm around the back of my chair as he inched closer to me in our seats. Before long the movie was forgotten and he had me making out with him in the dark theater. I’d been glad we were in the far back seats at the end so there wasn’t anyone paying attention to us.

Something I figured he’d planned all along.

After, he took me for ice cream where I decided it was time to turn the tables. I tortured him with every lick, swirl, and moan as I devoured the two scoop, waffle cone as slowly as possible.

When he told me I was going to pay for what I’d done, I giggled and he swatted my ass right there on the sidewalk for the whole world to see.
