Pulling my feet free from his hold, he watched as I tucked them under me and moved to my knees, crawling slowly across the couch. Swinging one leg over his legs, I sat on his lap and wrapped my arms around his neck. I leaned over, pressed a kiss to his chest right over his heart, and felt the rapid thumping against my lips.

It was good to know I had that effect on him.

Straightening, I looked into his stormy, black eyes, that swirled with emotion after emotion.

“I need you, Rowan. I want to feel alive. You can do that.” I pleaded with him with my stare. “Make love to me, please.”

He was breathing rapidly, fighting with himself about what to do.

“You can be gentle this time. I’ll be okay.” I ran my hands up and down his smooth, muscular chest and pressed my core down on him, swirling my hips.

He sucked in air. “You don’t fight fair, Buttercup.”

“Is that a yes?” I asked in a hopeful tone.

He put his hands under my arms and turned me to lay me down on the couch, where he followed me over.

“How can I say no to the woman I love?”

The truth was he couldn’t.

And thank gosh for that.

ChapterThirty-One

ROWAN

“What’s the occasion?”Brin asked.

We were in the truck headed to the bakery where I bought all the goodies from and had gotten Zander’s cake. Since I always picked them up and brought the goodies to the house, she’d never been in the shop herself.

Glancing over at her briefly, I smiled. “No occasion, baby. I just thought we could do something altogether today before you leave me for your sleepover.”

It was clear I was dreading her being gone and maybe it seemed silly, but I had my reasons. Not only was it because we still didn’t know where Michael the crazy husband was, but also because I hadn’t spent a night away from Brin since he’d run her off the road.

My jaw tightened thinking about it every time and I was surprised I hadn’t broken a tooth with how hard I clenched. I wouldn’t rest until we found him. And even after that, I wasn’t sure if I would ever relax completely. I knew what losing someone you loved felt like and after the scare with Zander and Brin, I constantly worried it would happen again.

I felt a soft hand rub across my arm where the tattoo for my sister was placed and looked over to see a soft, sympathetic look on Brin’s pretty face. She always knew somehow.

“Jelena knows how much you love and miss her.”

My heart squeezed.

Brinley and I had talked about her and Luke many times over the last few weeks. We’d even told Zander more about them too. He loved to ask questions and I liked to answer, but I wish it didn’t still feel so raw.

“Daddy,” Zander called from the back seat. “Do you think Auntie Jelena would have liked me?”

And that was one of his favorite questions. For some reason, it was important to him. Brin had done an amazing time making sure he knew about Luke and how much he would have adored him but finding out about Jelena was new.

Brin moved her hand and grabbed mine where it rested on my thigh in silent support.

“You bet she would, bud. She would have loved you and you two would have had so much fun.”

I could picture it in my head. She would have been the fun aunt, but also the one that caused chaos, and let him get away with everything.

“I’m going to talk to her and Luke in heaven,” he said.

Getting choked up, I couldn’t respond so Brin did it for me.
