“They wouldlovethat, baby.”

Then she did what she did when things got hard and changed the subject. Sometimes I wished she wouldn’t do that, but I understood why she did and respected her when it was what she needed to do. Right then I was thankful for it.

“What are you going to get at the bakery?” she asked our son.

I looked in the rearview mirror and saw Zander put one finger to his lip and tap it in thought. “Hmm. Can I get two things?”

I was about to say yes because looking at him in the mirror with his adorable smile and hopeful look was hard to deny, but Brin wasn’t looking at him and she told him he could have just one.

“You have your sleepover tonight and will probably have way too much junk then.”

He was a good sport and didn’t argue. Zander was looking forward to Dexter coming over and I was on kid duty. It had been three weeks since the accident and tonight would be the first night he was going to sleep in his room. With Dexter there, he’d feel safer and maybe it would help going forward.

I wanted to be with Zander but also by Brin’s side. All the girls were sleeping at Alley’s but Gyth would be right outside the whole time since Summer would be with the girls and his son would be with me. Lyric was planning on being there too so It made me feel better. And because Alley and Landon’s little girl was so small, Landon was banished to the bedroom for the night to care for his daughter. What could happen with all three guys there? Logically I knew not much, yet I still felt uneasy.

We pulled up in front of the bakery and Brin glanced over at the storefront. “Capri’s,” she murmured. “That’s her name right?”

“Yup. Let’s go in. I think you’ll like her.”

After getting out of the vehicle, Zander’s hand in each of ours, we started toward the door and Brin stopped suddenly, glancing at the place next to the bakery.

“What is it?” I asked.

“It's for lease,” she told me.

I’d seen the sign the last time I was in and I’d guessed it was still available, but I wasn’t sure why Brin cared. Then it hit me. She hadn’t talked about it a lot since arriving, but one time she’d said maybe someday she would open another bookstore. When she started working for Alley and with everything happening, she’d never mentioned it again.

But I could see the wheels turning as she stared at the empty space.

“If you're interested we could call and check it out?”

Her gaze snapped to mine. “I—”

Cutting her off, I placed my free hand on the side of her face. “You can do anything you want to, Brin.” I dropped my hand and pulled out my phone, then snapped a picture of the number on the sign. “We’ll call later. Let’s get some sweets.”

“Finally,” Zander said dramatically.

I held the door open and ushered them in.

“Oh my goodness it smells heavenly in here.” Brin’s breath caught when she looked at the woman behind the counter who had a big, bright smile on her face.

Turning to me, she whispered, “You didn’t tell me how stunning she is.”

“That’s because I only have eyes for you and you’re the most beautiful woman in the world to me.”

“Flatterer.” She playfully swatted me.

“It’s true, baby.”

“I love you,” she said.

I sighed. “God, I will never get tired of hearing that.”

“Then I will never get tired of telling you.” She stood on the tips of her toes and kissed me.

When she pulled back, I smirked. “Are you marking your territory?”

“You bet I am.” This time she gave me a wink and my pulse ramped up a few notches.
