Or perfect for her.

“Do you even know what you’re doing?” I asked all the guys.

The girls had their get-together a few weeks back and it had been our turn. I didn’t think they knew what they were getting into when I had asked them all to lunch and told them I needed help.

I probably should have asked one of the ladies, but these guys had my back, and I wanted to do this with them.

So there we all were. Me, Braxton, Gyth, Landon, Kace, and Lyric, all standing in the jewelry store as I looked for the ring that I would give Brinley as I asked her to marry me.

“Of course we do,” Kace said. “Well all except this dipshit over here.” He leaned over and smacked Lyric upside the head. “He’ll need our help soon enough.”

Lyric had always claimed that finding a woman and settling down would not happen for him. He’d been a good sport about it but standing in the store he looked different and didn’t speak a rebuttal to Kace’s comment like he usually would.

We were all looking at him but he was staring down at the display case. Kace glanced over at me and frowned.

“I think this one is nice,” Lyric mumbled.

I leaned over and looked into the glass case. The ring he was pointing out was in fact beautiful, and believe it or not, looked as if it would be just what I was searching for. How did he know that? All the other guys took a peek.

“Can we see that one?” Lyric asked the sales lady.

She did as he requested and started to hand it to Lyric instead of me.

“Not me, give it to him. He’s the one getting married.” His voice was kind of robotic and I was wondering what in the world was going on. “I almost got married once, but I won’t be doing that again.”

Taking the ring from the woman, I held it in my hand and stared at Lyric in shock. All the guys' mouths were hanging open.

“You never said anything,” Kace said.

“It was a long time ago. I asked before I left for the military, and she said yes. I came home and found her in bed with someone else. Marriage called off. It’s your typical story. She is blissfully married to someone else now.”

He said it so matter-of-factly, but you could tell he was still wounded. Now it was clear why he always said he wouldn’t be joining our club. Couldn’t blame him either.

“I’m sorry, man,” Kace said. “It doesn’t matter if it happens all the time or not, when it happens to you, it’s fucked up and it hurts. But believe me, there is someone out there for you. And she won’t be a cheating bitch.” Kace was pissed on his friend's behalf and I could understand. They had a lot in common.

“You guys found the good ones, but I’m not trusting someone like that again.” Snapping out of the funk he’d gotten into, Lyric looked at me and pointed at my hand. “What do you think about that one?” Nodding at the ring, I peered down.

“It’s perfect,” I told him.

He’d obviously searched for rings before and had good instincts. I hoped someday he’d let go of the notion that all women would do what his ex had. We had proof right in front of us that life after that bullshit existed.

“Just don’t look at the price,” he joked.

When I looked anyway, I gulped. The guys laughed.

“I warned you,” Lyric said.

“She’s worth every penny. Let’s just hope she says yes.” That scared the shit out of me. What if even with the hints and talk about the future when it came right down to it, she said no?

“You got this one in the bag,” Gyth reassured me.

These guys were fucking amazing men.
