“I’d never dream of it. Unless, of course, he asked me to. Sirene, stay here.”

They reached Thorne’s chambers, and without a second glance, Thorne opened the door only to step inside and shut it in his sire’s face.

Then they were alone. Thorne’s smile never fell.

“My pretty, naughty boy. What have you done?”

Haven swallowed, trembling. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh, but I think you do. I think you know exactly what I mean. We’re going to take advantage of your little misstep to the fullest extent.”

“I didn’t do anything! The human attacked me and locked me up—”

“You think you can fool me with that? You may look like an empty-headed little waif, but I know you, Haven. I know what you’re capable of. And no human would be able to outmatch you. Even if he was trained as a slayer, you have my blood, the Bathory blood, flowing through your veins. The blood of the Ambrogio. The council may believe that story, my love. But not me. You know better.”

Haven tried to hold himself steady, staring at Thorne, seeing his face for what seemed to be the first time. “I don’t think I know anything anymore.”

Thorne huffed a laugh. “So dramatic, love.”

“You...did you purchase me?”

“Purchase you?”

“Back then. All those years ago. Did you purchase me for my blood? Did you seek me out?”

His sire’s face was unmoving. “I saved you. You know that.”

“Would I even have been in that situation had it not been for you?”

Shimmering white teeth exposed themselves as Thorne’s lip curled. “You want someone to blame for all those years you suffered.”

“I thought you’d saved me. You told me you found me and rescued me. I spent all this time looking at you as my savior.”

Darkness fell over Thorne’s features. “I am your savior, Haven. You’d do well not to forget that.”

“You bought me like a slave so you could have my blood. Didn’t you?”

“I saved you back then, and I’ve saved you now. And you’ll repay me.”

“Or what?”

“Or the truth will be revealed. And any chance of getting back to your little human lover will dissolve into nothing.”

Haven stiffened, saying nothing.

“I know everything, Haven,” Thorne continued. “Sirene told me it all.”

She wouldn’t. Haven suppressed a gasp—he wouldn’t believe Thorne’s lies. He would give him nothing.

“You think she’s that loyal to you? That she’d help you free a member of the Veritas and not report that back to me? You forget, my love, who first assigned her to your service.”

Sickness flooded Haven’s stomach.

“That’s right. I know you assisted the human in his murder. I know you set Cypress free.”

“You’ve no proof of anything.”

“Is Sirene’s testimony not enough proof?”
