Disorientation had my head spinning as he threw me over his shoulder and took off running. I couldn’t yell at him because I lost my breath every time my stomach impacted with his shoulder as he ran.

“Hey, Vic. Anyone fill you in? Yeah, we’re fine. There’s a pike in the tire, but no one’s come for us. Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. Suggestions? Okay. We’ll be careful. Keep a lookout.”

He didn’t elaborate after the call was over. He just kept running.

“Shoot!” His feet skidded across the ground as he tried to stop our run. “Uncle Alex! Are you insane?”

“Come here. We need you to leave no trace of where you go. We’re jumping.” For once, the Healing Elemental sounded serious and not demeaning.

Jeff put me down and held me to him before placing his hand in his uncle’s. The view changed from snow and trees to Jeff’s house. Alex disappeared without another word.

“Are you okay?” Jeff let his fingers run across my cheek.

“Yeah. What about you?”

“Alex healed me when we jumped. I’m okay.”

I moved closer to hug him. “I’m tired.” All the adrenaline from earlier and whatever injuries I’d acquired had exhausted my body. Not to mention the alarm going off all night.

“Nate will be back in about twenty minutes. He’ll want to make sure you’re okay, but we can at least change and rest.”

“Okay.”

Jeff took my hand and led me up the stairs to his room. Inside, he pulled me to the dresser and pulled out another pair of his pajama bottoms and handed it over. Then, he went to his closet and brought out a hoodie.

“Here. You’ll be comfortable in these. Now, go change.” He inclined his head toward the bathroom, and I went without delay.

I didn’t mind dresses, but his clothes looked comfortable, and they were. They were also warm after being out in the cold and lying in the wet snow during my healing.

Jeff wasn’t in the room when I walked back into it, but his clothes lay in a pile in a corner—something he’d need to remedy—letting me know he’d changed. I left the room and found him in the kitchen, also wearing pajamas, making what looked like hot chocolate. Hadn’t we just had a large cup each? That man lived off of sugar.

As if he’d read my mind, he turned and held a mug out to me. “I know we just had some, but after the accident, I figured you’d want something warm and comforting. I also have these.”

He held up a package of cookies, and I laughed and shook my head in humor. Together, we walked into the living room and each sat on an end of the couch, putting our feet up so we could share a blanket while we warmed. Or rather, while I warmed. The man was a furnace!

Nathaniel hadn’t arrived yet by the time I finished off my hot chocolate and two cookies. Jeff had only had three with his drink. My body wanted rest, but I couldn’t get comfortable.

“Hey, come here.” Jeff pulled the blanket off and pulled me over to lie on top of him. My cheeks couldn’t hide a blush, but my head rested on his chest, so he didn’t see it. “You’re keeping me from falling asleep.”

“Nate will be here soon.”

“And we’ll sleep until he arrives.”

I jumped, and my heart sped in reaction to the fright, when the door slammed open and Nathaniel called my name, waking me from a sleep I didn’t remember falling into.

“Be quiet,” Jeff groaned from beneath me, and his arm around me pulled me back down to rest. I complied, still tired.

“What is going on?” Nathaniel wasn’t pleased, but he’d understand once we shared the good news.

“Sit, Nate. We’ve had a long day.”

Carmon, Victor, Jonas, and Drew had come in with Nathaniel. Each man took a seat on one of the two love seats, with Carmon sitting on the bricks in front of the fireplace.

“Did you talk with her?” Carmon asked Jeff.

“Well, if I hadn’t, you’d have ruined it with that line.” Jeff glared over at his brother, but it was only halfhearted. That didn’t matter.

I slapped his chest. “Be nice, Jefferson.”
