“Time for bed, sleepyhead,” Law says, standing from his chair.

“I’m not going back to my room. I don’t want to see him tonight.”

“You can have my room. Although Julian might kill me,” he chuckles.

“I’m not stealing your bed. I’ll crash right there.” I point to the settee. “I need sleep and that’ll do just fine.”

I make my way to the couch and settle in. My eyes are closed and I’m just about to drift off when I feel a blanket being placed over top of me. I burrow beneath it, chasing the warmth.

“Good night, Marina.”

Julian. It’s his voice, but my body won’t cooperate. It demands sleep and I fall under its spell, not able to get the words out.

I love you, Julian.

Chapter Six

The next morning, I’m nursing my first hangover, regretting my decision to drink. The momentary reprieve from my problems was not worth the aftereffects.

I hug Law, preparing to leave this cabin behind. “Why aren’t you coming with us?” I ask

him, wishing he were heading to Julian’s too. The mood is always lighter when Law’s around and if I’m being honest, I could use the buffer.

“I’ll be there in a few days,” Law supplies. “We can’t all travel together; it’s too dangerous.”

My concern ratchets up a notch, and the frown it causes isn’t helping my headache.

“You know I’m good,” Law says, pulling me into a bear hug. “Shante hooked me up. It’s you I’m worried about,” he says, looking into my eyes as if to gauge whether I’m going to break.

“I’m fine, Law. I’ve got your brother to protect me.”

Law’s eyes go to Julian, and all brotherly love is absent. In its place, there’s a hard glower.

“Yeah, your best interest is definitely his priority,” he seethes, leaning down to whisper in my ear. “Make him tell you everything.”

Something about the wordeverythingonly makes my hackles rise more. Just how much is Julian keeping from me?

I don’t have time to linger on that thought because Julian grabs my hand, pulling me out the door and away from Law.

“Have fun last night?” he quips, and I bristle at his insinuating tone.

As much as I want to snap back, I don’t owe him anything. He knows damn well that Law is my friend and any suggestion otherwise is ridiculous. Especially coming from an immortal king of vampires.Who’s being immature now?

A Kia Sorento sits in the driveway and I lift my brow. One thing I know about Julian is that he’s a car guy. The flashier and the faster, the better. This is an interesting choice.

“We can’t be driving around in something that draws attention. We need to fly under the radar,” he explains, opening the passenger door for me.

We’re on the road for ten minutes, neither of us saying a word. The silence is deafening and my stomach flops with trepidation. Things haven’t been right since Julian and Law’s discussion, and they’re even worse since I left the room last night.

“How long of a drive is it?” I ask, trying to make conversation, because Julian is far away, lost in thought. I need to force him to talk to me.

“We have an hour. I suggest you get some rest. Tonight’s going to be a long night.”

I frown. “Why? Is something happening?”

Julian’s cell phone rings, drawing his attention away from me and my unanswered questions.

“Bash, what’s the word?” His lips form a line as he listens to whatever Bash is filling him in on. “Have you prepared a room for Marina?”
