Law snorts. “It doesn’t look like that was necessary; you already know your Prince Charming.”

“Semantics.”

“When did you become so boy crazy?” Law asks with a smirk.

“Not boy crazy. I’m just in love.”

He sticks his finger in his mouth and mock gags.

“But seriously, what the hell happened?” My brows pull together as I try to remember, growing more agitated by my lack of memory.

“Shante came and helped to calm you every time you woke. We kept you hydrated and fed, and then she’d knock you right back out.” He shrugs as if it’s no big deal. “She said you needed the rest.”

“What?” I say, and my words come out craggy, but I attempt to sit up.

“You need rest, Marina. Lie back down,” he commands.

I do as he says, lying back so that my body is against the pillows but in a seated position. I try to remember anything from the past week, but it’s as though my mind has been wiped. There is not one memory of Shante.

“I need answers, Law,” I say through gritted teeth. His fidgety behavior isn’t helping my frustration. It’s obvious he’s keeping things from me.

“Try to remember, Marina,” he presses, and I do try, but nothing comes. I shake my head at him. “We were at my house for a celebration and Marcellus stormed the party,” he offers, to get me started.

My eyes squint as I recall dancing and a room full of humans and vampires, laughing and having a great time. There were tables full of all kinds of elaborate food. Foods that Stacey and I had helped Law choose.

Stacey.

My hands fly to my mouth, smothering a sob, as I remember Stacey crumpling to the floor.Hekilled her.

Law nods his head as if I’d said the words out loud. Maybe I did, but I’m in too much shock to be certain. She’s dead and there was nothing I could’ve done to protect her.

Marcellus and the absolute carnagehe brought down on Law’s house aren’t something I’ll ever be able to get out of my head now that it’s all coming back. Not even years of watching horror movies could’ve prepared me for the violence I witnessed.

A tear trickles down my cheek and my eyes close as I remember the last few weeks that Stacey and I shared. The bond we’d forged. Now she’s gone.

“I know how hard this must be, but she chose that fate, Marina.”

My eyes widen. “Why would you say such a thing?”

His hands lift to stop me. “Julian wants to be the one to explain that piece, but I want you to have some comfort in knowing that Stacey knew her fate and chose to die.”

I feel like he’s punched me in the gut. Stacey had her whole life ahead of her. She had a family that loved her. She wouldn’t choose death. I won’t believe that.

“Please, just trust me,” Law begs, hands pressed together as though he’s praying.

“I trust that you believe that, Law, but I know Stacey and nothing about that makes sense.”

He nods his head. “Julian has those answers for you.”

“Where is he?” I demand. After everything that happened, I need him beside me. Didn’t he want to be here to comfort me?

The pain of losing Stacey is so acute. After everything she endured, I thought she was finally safe. She thought she was safe. You didn’t protect her.

Marcellus took her from me. He just keeps taking. Killing Stacey and kidnapping Shannon... and for what? What had I ever done to him?

You’re human and he’s evil.

“Where is Julian?” I say once more, needing some news on his whereabouts before I lose my damn mind.
