“But why did he have to hurt her?” I ask, voice quiet and shaky as all the adrenaline rushes through me.

“Anderson had to handle her like that or else she would’ve overpowered him. He’s not a Born. His strength is limited, and a new bite is always stronger in the beginning, before they get their cravings under control. He knows what he’s doing.”

I let everything he’s said sink in and he’s right—I jumped to conclusions and let my emotions get the better of me. My shoulders sag and my head falls forward, eyes downcast.

“Listen to me,” he orders, putting his finger under my chin and tipping my head back to look at him. “I don’t expect you to understand everything about this world. I know this is new to you, but I need you to trust me, and I need you to be calm.” I nod my head. “The syringe was blood. That’s what she needs in order to calm her craving,” he explains. “It’s very similar to a drug addiction. By inserting it directly into her vein, Anderson made sure it will get into her bloodstream quicker and help her relax faster.”

Again, more information that would’ve been fantastic to know before I lost my cool.

“He did not harm her in any way.”

“I feel like an idiot,” I admit. “I’m sorry. There’s nothing else I can say. You’re right. It was hard watching my friend suffer, and I get it now.”

“You get what?” he asks, eyes narrowed in confusion.

“I get why you hid this from me. I wasn’t ready to see that.”

He pulls me in, crushing me into his chest. “I know, baby.” He runs his hand down my hair soothingly. “But it’s you who were right. I can’t keep this world from you. This is my reality, and it’s yours now too.”

“There has to be a better way, Julian. Something to help speed up this process.”

“I know,” he coos. “We’re trying to figure it out.”

I step back. “I want to help,” I say, looking up at him from under my lashes. “Let me come up with some ideas to test on Shannon? I have to do something.”

He nods. “Not tonight, though. You’re tired, and she’s tired. Let’s go back to the hotel and get some rest.”

“When do we have to go back?”

“A day or two at the most,” he says, and I nod.

“Tonight, can it be just you and me?” I suggest, and he grins.

“You want to be alone with me?”

I smile, loving this moment and hoping it’ll lead to us getting more on track.

“It’s long overdue.”

He pulls me in, crashing his lips to mine, and I liquefy.

Every tension melts away and all I want to do is get lost in Julian’s touch.

Chapter Fifteen

The door to the hotel room is barely shut when Julian pulls me in and slams his lips to mine.

I let him kiss me because I need it. I need his affection. I need his reassurance. That might make me a stupid, stupidgirl, but that’s my truth. Julian Bellamy owns every part of my heart, and I need him to show me that he feels the same way.

“Are we okay, Julian?” I ask, trying to keep the uncertainty out of my voice.

“Always,” he says, placing his hands under my backside and lifting me into the air, carrying me toward the bed. “I need you next to me.”

My arms fly around his neck and my lips crash to his. Everything I needed to hear, he said, and I am done overthinking. He wants to be with me, and I am going to push all thoughts of Shannon and vampires out of my mind. I plan to show him that he has my heart.

He backs me up toward the bed, pulling my dress up over my head and tossing it to the side. When my knees hit the edge of the mattress, I lower myself, pulling Julian down by the collar of his white shirt. He comes willingly, sealing our mouths together.

My fingers work deftly to unbutton his grey chinos, lips never leaving his. My tongue begs entrance and he doesn’t hesitate in reciprocating, massaging and coaxing mewls from my lips. We stay like this for several minutes until I can’t bear it any longer.
