“I need you, Julian,” I practically cry. “Please make love to me.”

He pulls away, lifting his own shirt over his head and stepping out of his pants and boxers, until he stands naked before me. My tongue darts out, tracing my bottom lip as I take him in.

Every time with him has me coming a little more undone. I feel emboldened. Julian makes me feel like a woman for the first time in my life.

“What are you thinking about, pretty girl?” Julian asks, smirking as if he already knows.

“How much I want you,” I admit.

He crawls over me, and I inch back so that we’re in the middle of the mattress, Julian atop me, looking down into my eyes.

“I’ll never tire of the way you’re looking at me, Marina.”

I chuckle. “I’ll never tire of looking at you.”

He grins, placing one more kiss to my lips before pulling down my black lace underwear and pushing inside of me. My head hits the bed and my eyes close as every inch of my body comes alive.

With every thrust, every touch, the world and all our worries disappear. In this moment, it’s only Julian and me. Nothing can touch us. In this room, in his arms, I feel safe. Secure. Invincible. If only it could stay like this.

“What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?” Julian murmurs, stroking his hand comfortingly through my hair.

“Nothing.”

He tsks. “You’re never this quiet unless you are contemplating.”

I sigh, knowing we need to have this talk, but not wanting to burst the contented bubble we’re currently inside.

“Adèle filled me in on most of your negotiation with her father, but she said she’d left the two of you to work out the details. What’s the plan?”

His arms come around my body, pulling my back against his firm chest. “Do we have to talk about that right now?”

“You asked,” I retort, and he chuckles into my hair.

“Count Dupré is calling the Council to the manor. I’m just waiting to hear when they will arrive. We plan to lay out the reasons why the auction needs to go. It’s the first step.”

I cluck my tongue considering all of the possible rebuttals. “Why do you believe it needs to go?” I ask, because for one, I’m curious to hear what his reasons are. For two, I can only imagine that this conversation won’t go well.

He’s trying to convince a group of ancient vampires that their very way of life—one they’ve had for centuries—needs to change. Those types of conversations haven’t gone well throughout history. In fact, they’ve started every war this world has ever seen.

He turns my body so that we’re facing, “Why are you questioning this? You want the auction stopped more than anyone.”

I run my hand down his cheek and lean up to kiss his furrowed brow.

“Of course I do. I just want to hear your pitch.”

His brow quirks. “You want me to sell you on something you’re already decided on?”

I smack his chest. “Just tell me what you plan to say. Since I won’t get to witness your passionate plea to the Council, I want you to give me a preview.”

“Passionate plea?” he asks, chuckling.

I laser him with aget talking, boystare and he finally complies.

“I plan to help them see that kidnapping and harming humans only puts our kind in grave danger. All it takes is for one connected human to lose someone they love, and it threatens our entire existence. It’s inhumane and does nothing but prove the stereotypes that have plagued vampires for centuries. Not to mention the evil intent driving those that torture and kill their purchased donors. Those same vampires are in league with my brother creating new bites that threaten to wipe out the human population if left unchecked.”

“Aren’t some of those Council members the very vampires that have already shown allegiance to your brother?” I ask, biting my lip.
