“What are you feeling?” Shante asks.

His eyes close tightly. “It feels like a magnet is drawing me toward it.” He shakes his head as if trying to clear the fog away. “I don’t understand it, but my heart is pounding, and my feet want to move.”

“Allow it,” I instruct, and without further prompting, Law does.

We’re weaving down dark hallways, and although I’ve been here before, I have no idea where we’re headed. Candelabras hang from the wall, lighting as we pass. I look to Shante.

She smiles. “We need the light.”

I chuckle. Traveling with a witch does have its perks.

My focus is on Shante when I almost run into the back of Law. He’s stopped outside a red door located somewhere at the back of the manor, if I’ve got my bearings correct.

Law moves forward and Shante’s hand extends out, stopping him.

“There’s someone inside. I can feel their energy. It’s what’s pulling Law toward it,” she explains to me. “I feel it.”

My head snaps to Law, who appears to be in a sort of trance. His attention is focused forward on that door. His hands twitch at his sides. I know he wants more than anything to go inside.

“What do we do?” I ask Shante, needing her advice. She’s never steered us wrong.

She sighs. “I don’t sense evil, and I don’t sense black magic. Whatever is behind that door is what we came for.”

I frown. We came for Marcellus. We came for information he might have. But I said I trust Shante, and I meant it. I nod, signaling I’m ready to face whatever lies behind that door.

Without any prompting, Law springs forward, throwing open the door.

Confusion flows through me as I try to work out what I’m seeing.

“Maggie,” Law croaks.

That’s when I know. Marina’s sister is here. The sister she thought was dead has been here all along.

Chapter Twenty-One

October 31, 2001

Yvette has deceived me. She worked with new vampires to murder the familiars. Had I found out a moment later, they’d be dead, and Yvette would be well on her way to overtaking my rule and her covens. Now, it’s not only the Council I need to keep the familiars hidden from, but any witches that wish to carry out Yvette’s plan. I’ve set in motion a plan to kidnap the girls and purchase them through the auction with the help of Ratilda. That way, no one will be the wiser.

Shante has gained my allegiance by taking down Yvette. Her coven bound her to the earth during the full moon. There she’ll remain for eternity. My plan is coming to fruition. Soon the Bellamy Crown will be preserved forever through these two humans.

I’ve managed to read through ten more pages of the journal and the only new information I have is how Shante came to be trusted by the Bellamy family—by turning on her sister.

Addy went back to her room to freshen up before seeing her father. She doesn’t want him to see her looking unkempt and despondent. She needs to be strong in order for this plan to work.

I’m just preparing to read another page when my door flies open and Katina strolls in, uninvited as usual.

“Please, come in.” The sarcasm oozes from my lips, but when I see the look on Katina’s face, I sit up. “What’s wrong?”

“You were almost killed, you silly human fool,” she shrieks, running toward me. She crushes me to her chest. “Why would you follow him? Do you truly have a death wish?”

I sigh. “I knew he was up to no good.”

“Poor excuse. Julian needs to lock you in the cellar.”

I chuckle. “He can try.”

“Oh, Marina, you really must be more careful. Do you have any idea how important you are?”
