“But you jumped. How are you here?” Law presses.

“When I leapt from the cliff, I never hit the bottom, because Marcellus caught me.”

Law and I share a look. One that clearly sayswhat the actual hell.

“Of course,” Shante proclaims. “That’s why I was unable to reach out.”

“Because she wasn’t dead?” Law pulls a face.

“How were you able to communicate with Marina while you were here?” Shante questions, and Maggie frowns.

“I haven’t communicated with Marina since the day I jumped,” she states.

“Julian. Law. Can I see you in the hallway?” Shante asks, exiting the room.

“Maggie, pack anything you want to bring with you. We’re leaving in ten minutes,” Law instructs, following Shante out of the room. I’m right behind them.

We’re not out in the hall for two seconds before I’m throwing questions at Shante.

“If not Maggie... who then?”

Her expression morphs from perplexed to vindicated in a matter of seconds as something clicks into place for her.

“Things are starting to be clearer.” She turns so that both Law and I are in view. “The gift of sight is fickle and rarely forthcoming. The accuracy is dependent on the correct questions being asked. If you deviate just slightly, the entire reading is null.”

“I don’t mean to be rude, Shante, but can you get to the point?”

She purses her lip, signaling she finds my pushiness rude anyway.

“My energy was being put toward the object of Marina’s concentration. She had been focused on Maggie, the sister communicating with her from the dead.”

“Right, she specifically called out to Maggie,” Law charges.

Shante shakes her head. “And therein lies the problem. Her energy was focused on two different paths. She didn’t know it, but we’re finding it to be true. One path was her sister Maggie, who wasn’t dead, which led to the second path.”

“A path to whoever was communicating with her,” I finish.

“Exactly,” Shante confirms. “When I was trying to tap into the energy, I was focusing on a dead Maggie, who never would appear because she’s not dead.”

“Wouldn’t your vision have been blank then? Why all the theatrics at the cabin?” Law questions.

“When I consulted my sisters, I was reminded of a time not too long ago where we encountered a very similar situation to what occurred when we were attempting to communicate with her at your cabin.” Law’s eyebrows tilt into the center. “The smoke and burning sensation... it happened with Yvette.”

I straighten at the mention of Shante’s traitorous sister.

“It wasn’t black magic,” Shante continues. “It wasFaeMagic.”

“What?” Law and I say simultaneously.

“Why would the Fae want to help Marina?” I question, and she shrugs.

“Now, that is a question worth asking.”

As much as I want to hear every part of this, it can wait. It’s more important that we get Maggie to safety and reunited with Marina. I want to be there to see the reunion, but someone needs to search this place for additional information. There will be time to celebrate Maggie being alive later.

“Law, you have to get her out of here. Now.”

“How will you get back?”
