Lex pulls his arm from around my waist as Kade approaches, and I stalk forward, closing the rest of the distance between us in a few angry strides.

“What the fuck was that?” I snap at him.

His silver eyes narrow. “That, Calla, was me correcting your mistake.” His words are clipped. “And I believe the words you’re looking for arethank you.”

“How aboutfuck you?” I shoot back, clenching my hands into fists to stop myself from trying to punch his stupid face.

“Oh, we both know you don’t have a problem with that,” he taunts, his lips twisting into a smirk.

I ignore that, glancing around to make sure we’re still out of earshot to the people around us. The foot traffic has picked up slightly, but no one is close enough to overhear when I say, “What did you say to her?”

Kade cocks his head to the side. “I told her you moved out of your apartment to live with a family friend. I also helped her remember her morning a bit differently than how it went down. You see, we don’t particularly like when certain people know about our… lifestyle.”

Lex snorts from behind me.

“Certain people? She’s my best friend, Kade. You can’t isolate me from the people I care about just because—”

“Yes, we can,” he interrupts. “You know why? Because when you run your mouth to people that can use the knowledge of what we are in very dangerous ways—”

“Kade,” Lex cuts in, and there’s a warning in his voice.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I demand. “Brighton wouldn’t tell anyone.” Considering she said we should go to her grandfather for help, that’s not entirely true, but if I asked, she would keep it secret.

“Not a risk we’re willing to take,” Kade says, his eyes trained on me.

“So, what? You followed me from the house?”

“Yep. Good thing, too. I guess we didn’t think we had to tell you to keep our little arrangement to yourself.”

I gape at him, incredulous. “Ourarrangement.” Shaking my head, I continue, “You can’t just… This isn’t… I don’t need a fucking babysitter.”

“Clearly you do,” Lex chimes in from behind me.

“Shut up,” I snap over my shoulder before facing Kade again. “This is ridiculous, I—”

“Agreed,” he says, cutting me off.

I shoot him a glare. “You have no idea how much I hate you right now.”

Kade steps closer, filling my personal space with mint and the crisp scent of his cologne as he lowers his mouth to my ear. “And yet, I bet you’d still come all over my fingers. Again.”

I open my mouth to fire back a venomous retort, but my breath catches in my throat.Fucking bastard.

Lex clears his throat. “All right, you two. Calla needs to get to class.”

Kade moves away slowly, his gaze fixed on my mouth for a long moment before his eyes lift to mine, glimmering with a challenge. “We’d better get going then.”

I finally find my voice and say, “We?”

“Uh-huh. You’ve made it perfectly clear you can’t handle the freedom we so graciously offered you, so I’m going to accompany you to this afternoon’s lecture.”

“The hell you are,” I snap angrily. The cool temperature and breeze coming off the water are no longer making me cold. The fire in my veins has made sweat dot my brow.

“Either Kade goes with you,” Lex says, “or you’re not going at all.”

My gaze swings between the two vampires on either side of me. “You have got to be kidding me.”

“Nope,” Kade says, popping the ‘p’ with a shit-eating grin curling his lips. “And don’t think I’ll let you copy my notes.”
