Nell’s fake smile is wavering. She’s sitting on one of my thighs in the common room as I lean back on the couch, and my hands on her waist are slowly scooting her back and forth, teasing her. She’s losing her mind, but I need this to keep me from going to the dark places inmymind.

Nell twists her head around and glares at me, bringing a smile to my face. She’s pissed that I’m not letting her relax, but I don’t want her to relax. I want her to be needy and begging. I love the flush on her cheeks, especially knowing that it’s just for me.

Pres drops down beside me and smirks when he looks at me. “How was your first week back at work, Nell?”

“Good,” she says, not meeting his eyes.

“How was your week?” he asks me.

“It’s great.” It is. I love being back on the road, even with Mac as a babysitter and only taking easy jobs like checking on elderly members that live in other places in the state or picking up cash from businesses or just being present in certain places at certain times with my hands in my pockets doing absolutely nothing.

“That’s good. Smoke?”

“Yeah. Out back.” I brush hair away from the side of Nell’s face and kiss her cheek. “Do you want to smoke with Pres and me?”

She shakes her head, and I release her hips so she can stand. “I’ll hang out here.”

I nod and kiss her forehead before Pres and I head outside. I drop into the seat and look up at the stars I haven’t seen since Nell arrived. I’ve been chained to my bed most of that time.

“So, what’s up with Nell?” Pres asks, lighting his joint.

“I don’t know if she knows.” She’s always on that damn computer, and I still haven’t asked what she’s doing on there. I keep assuming she’ll let me know when she’s ready.

Pres shakes his head. “I meant between the two of you.”

Oh.“Uh, I don't know.” She makes me feel good. She makes me happy again, even after everything else. She makes things easier.

“You guys have known each other a long time,” Pres comments, twirling the joint between his fingers and watching the lit end glow.

“Tree, you need to come get Nell,” Amy says with a voice full of urgency, head hanging around the door. “She’s-”

Listening, I can hear her shouting in the house, angry and slurring. “What the fuck?”

Nell

I’m not good when I’m feeling jealous and territorial. I’m a fucking mess of emotion and trauma and there’s booze flowing through my veins- I’m hitting a different level. And thatgirl-the one that was grinding her nasty ass on Knox a few weeks ago-keeps staring at me with a sneer on her face. She has been since we got down here, and I’m getting tired of it.

Really tired of it apparently, and I’m the last one to find out as my feet bring me right to her face. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” my mouth demands to know.

“Me?” she shouts back, meeting my aggression head-on with a matching one of her own. “You’re the one fucking your sister’s husband. Nothin’s wrong with me, darlin’. You may want to turn around and look in a mirror.”

“You don’t know shit about my sister or Knox, you fucking whore. If you had known something, you’d have known he’d never touch you.”

“Never? Go back and tell that to him six years ago. He was fucking me untilyoushowed up.”

“Horse shit! You just spread your legs for anyone in a cut.” I do not know this information. I’m making an assumption, and I’m drunk and mad so I’m being mean. “You wouldn’t remember which one was in your bed from one second to the next!”

“At least it’s not my own family!”

“Oh, fuck you! You’re just-”

“Alright, killer,” Tree says, looping his arm around my waist and pulling me backwards. “That’s enough for the night.” He carries me out to the back side of the clubhouse and slams the door behind us. “What the fuck was that about?”

I want to believe him, but I have to ask. “Did you fuck her? Did youeverfuck her? Because you told me you hadn’t touched anyone since Layla and I believed you! Were you lying to me?”

Knox’s eyes close and he takes a deep breath.

The world shatters. “Youliedto me?” I scream, forcing myself away from him and bending over at the waist to try to fight off the nausea.
