“You’ll see,” he sighs.

“Don’t you think this whole thing is just a bit overboard? What do you want with me?”

“You ask a lot of questions,” he says, then adds, “Fortress is no place for a lady.”

“But your Mom?”

“She lives right next door to me. So she won’t be at Fortress for much longer, either. My mother can’t be contained, and if she’s not feeding everyone, she will die.”

I form a small smile, but it disappears quickly.Don’t fall for it.

I fold my arms across my chest as he glances at me again.

“Are you cold?” he asks.

I shake my head. “I’m fine.”

“You’ll be more comfortable here,” he says, “until we figure this out.”

“How long is that going to take?”

As if negotiating my release with my family isn’t going to be what they’re up to. I know I’m their new target practice.

“As long as it takes,” he replies bluntly.

“Does everyone hate me?” I say from nowhere.

I feel his head turn to look at me sharply. “Hate you?”

“It’s not my fault I have the same last name as one of your mortal enemies. I was born with it.”

“Nobody hates you.”

“I don’t care if they do, by the way, but keeping me is of no value.”

“On the contrary, you’re a Petrov.”

“So you’re going to use me instead?”

He eyes me curiously and says, “So we just let you go? Is that what you’re suggesting?”

I sigh. “Marco, even I know keeping me will only start a war once my family finds out.”

“The fact is, we don’t trust Russians. Especially the niece of our enemy.”

He turns back to the road.

“In case I implicate you?”

“Well, you promised to. Remember when I carried you out of there.”

Oh, I remember. He flung me over his shoulder as I beat his back with my fists.

I can feel the anger coming off him as he looks from the windshield to me and back to the road again.

“I remember, I was there.”

“This is for your own protection until we can call a meeting with Aleksi.”
