“On Medici turf?” he questions. “My brother…” Then he stops, muttersfuckunder his breath, and glances back up.

This can’t be news to him.

He knows everything going on underground and within the ranks. He’s shrewd, and he’s unquestionably not an idiot.

“My brother may have taken some liberties, though I can assure you I wasn’t aware of it.”

Angelo scoffs. “Come now, what do you take me for? A fool?”

The Russians tried, and failed, to overturn the Medicis back when Uncle Mario was in power. That did not end well for them. However, there was a ceasefire, and since that day, we’ve been on relatively mutual terms. As long as the Petrovs keep away from our side of town and fuck off elsewhere, we won’t have any problems.

Pretty simple, really.

“Angelo, my brother has been…unwell, as of late. I knew he was operating in a small circle, but I wasn’t aware of the extent of his actions. Rest assured, I will see to it and ensure the borders are not crossed.”

We discussed in the car what to do about Katiya. She serves no purpose to us if this meeting ends well. If it doesn’t, then she may be staying a little longer.

If it seems like we have her captive, this will only ensure war.

I know how fond of Katiya Aleksi is, which is why Angelo has been so adamant about keeping her safe.

“Your word doesn’t mean much, Aleksi. I have to say, this displeases me.”

He tells his guard over his shoulder to find his brother, all in Russian.

“I have no reason to start a petty gambling and fighting ring when I have north of the river and my business dealings taking precedence,” he says. “The notion is absurd. We have a treaty in place, and I have honored it.”

It isn’t reassuring that he doesn't know where his brother is or what he’s been doing, or if he is actually telling the truth.

Angelo glances at me, and I give him a nod.

“That brings me to our treaty,” I say, stepping in. “While Angelo was temporarily indisposed, we learned about a human smuggling ring, traced back to Rombaldi and the Brazilians.”

“Yes, I heard. And you took care of it swiftly.”

Good news traveled fast on that one; it made the nightly news. Though Angelo set it up for the Feds to reap the praise, it meant keeping the police commissioner fully in his pocket.

Angelo shakes his head. “We do not believe that Rombaldi was working alone with those who betrayed us, the associate we questioned over it came from your camp.”

He stares at me with pure ice in his glare.

Maxim goes to speak, but Aleksi stops him.

“That isn’t possible,” he spits. “If there was a traitor among us, I’d know about it.”

“It’s impossible to keep up with all of your minions,” I say, “Especially those on the bottom.”

“Where is this associate? I will deal with him.”

“Unfortunately, your associate couldn’t help us further with our inquiries.”

He’s at the bottom of the Charles, feeding the fish.

Aleksi points at me. “You already got Rombaldi. What would this associate gain from operating after his death?”

“The shipments didn’t stop. He was recruiting young girls, women and children.”

He shakes his head.
