“There was still a shipment of girls set to leave for the Middle East,” I say, “until we intercepted it a few days ago.”

He looks bored. “Why does this concern me?”

I steel my jaw, remembering that day clearly.

The day I picked Katiya up, and she fought me, kicking and screaming in terror.

“Because when we raided the building, we found your niece.”

He stares at me, his eyes narrowing slightly.

“What?” His Russian accent is thick and not amused.

“She was kidnapped, along with the sister of Angelo’s girlfriend. We tracked them down.”

If looks could kill, I’d be dead a hundred times over.

“Katiya?” he says the words carefully, like she’s something delicate.

“Yes.”

He frowns. “That’s impossible, Katiya is in Europe.”

“I’m afraid she never made it to the airport.”

He looks from me to Angelo, and I can see the anger slowly rising on his face.

“You think you can come here and fucking spew this garbage!” he roars.

So, Katiya is a soft spot for him. Good to know.

“It’s not garbage,” Angelo says calmly. “She was part of the deal, and there’s a hefty price to be paid for a virgin Russian Princess.”

Aleksi bangs his fist down on the table just about the same time Rocco draws his gun in my periphery, the other soldiers following suit on both sides. Everyone has a gun pointed, except me, Angelo, and Aleksi.

“You will bring her to me!” he demands.

“Calm down,” Angelo says. “And call your men off, we’re not here to shoot each other.”

“You think I trust you?” he snarls. “I want Katiya. Bring her to me, now.”

“She’s not our prisoner,” Angelo says. “We didn’t realize who she was at first.”

That is a stretch of the truth, but telling Aleksi we’ve held her prisoner for days won’t go down well. The truth can come out long after she’s set free.

Angelo gives Rocco the nod as he looks pretty disappointed he doesn’t get to shoot anyone, namely Maxim.

He looks at me again. “Was she harmed?”

I shake my head. “Shaken up, but not touched. These bastards had the monopoly on mostly homeless and underage girls. Still, they also had women of stature, like Katiya, and it leads us to believe that there is someone involved other than Rombaldi’s men since the shipment still planned on going ahead after he’d been dealt with.”

Aleksi rubs his chin. “You will give me the name of this associate.”

Angelo does so, then adds, “It won’t do any good, since he’s fish food.”

Aleksi grunts. “Where is Katiya?”

“She’s at Fortress,” Angelo lies. “She’s safe.”
