“They love you both. There is no way they will be okay with this,” Mia demanded.

“Mummy, I have to go to the bathroom,” Sophie interrupted our discussion.

“I hope she didn’t hear any of that,” I said.

“Baby girl, just in time. We’re in the city at my building.” Mia grabbed her purse and waved us out. “Let’s hurry and go upstairs.”

After tellingMia what was happening with Jimmy, I thought I’d feel relief, but instead I felt more nervous. We’d spent the rest of the day playing games in the penthouse and watching people from the balcony. Parker had come in around dinner time and we all took Amoeba for a walk in the park.

“Uncle Parker, when I go home to Australia, will Tinkerbell keep working?” Sophie asked, to everyone’s surprise.

Chapter 75

Trey

I’d been tied up at the hospital the beginning of the week, but my every free moment went back and forth from the mail-order bride to Chloe and her departure. I not only wanted, but needed, to see her again before she left.

“Do you have plans tomorrow afternoon?”I texted Mia.

“Not as of yet. What’s up?”Mia replied.

“I was wondering about that picnic.”

“You should text Chloe to see if she is interested. I can’t answer for her.”

“Okay I will.”

“Hi, I was hoping to get that picnic in with you and Sophie that we spoke of,”I texted Chloe.

“Hi yourself. That would be great. Sophie has asked me a few times about it,”Chloe answered back.

“How’s tomorrow afternoon? Around three o’clock?”I asked.

“That’s perfect. I’ll bring the food.”

“No don’t. Chef Harris already offered. He would be disappointed if I didn’t let him.”

“You should invite him to join us. I’d love to say goodbye.”

“Good idea. I’ll ask him, but don’t be surprised if he doesn’t come.”

“Did you invite Mia too?”

“Of course, I wouldn’t leave her out, especially with you leaving soon.”

“Thanks. See you tomorrow.”

“Paging Dr Hawthorne to pediatrics.” I grabbed the nearest house phone and dialed the pediatric floor.

“Hey Betty, which patient is it?” I asked, looking at my watch. “I’ll be there in five minutes. Please ask the parents to wait.”

“I’ll let them know, but promise me you won’t stay too long talking with them,” Betty urged. “You need to learn how to shorten your time or you’ll never have a life outside of this building.”

“What makes you think I want one?” I teased. “I’ll be right up. Oh, Betty, I know your day off is tomorrow. Want to come to a picnic with me?”

“Dr. Hawthorne, what are you up to?” Betty asked. “You’ve never asked me to do something outside of work, so you’re up to something, young man.”
