Chapter 40

Chloe

With Victoria out of the room and Sophie busy with Amoeba, I got off the floor and dropped into the chair next to Mia, who had been intently looking at the files Victoria had left on the chair.

“So, whatcha looking at?” I asked, trying to see for myself. “I heard Victoria talking about Trey getting married.”

“Yeah, he asked her to help him with a mail-order bride since it worked out for Kellan and Parker,” Mia said, not looking up from the file she was reading. “She asked me to help her pick.”

“Let me have a gander. I can help too,” I said, trying to hide my unwarranted jealousy.

We sat quietly looking over the files, chatting about different things we saw. We hadn’t heard the door open and Victoria walk in.

“Look at you two snooping into my personal files,” Victoria scolded on a laugh. “I leave for five minutes and this happens.”

“Sorry Victoria, I was just helping Mia,” I said nervously. “I thought she was allowed to be looking.”

“Oh, dear I’m just teasing you. I told her to look at the files.” Victoria walked over to look over Mia’s shoulder. “So, which one do you like?”

“There’s three here that would be good for him, but I don’t know. Which do you like?” Mia fanned out the three pictures. “Bigger question is, are they fun?”

“Don’t they have to like kids, too?” I added.

“Very true Chloe. Tell me, which one do you like for him?” Victoria asked.

I knew exactly which mail-order bride file I liked the most for Trey, but I couldn’t tell them “none of them.” I couldn’t tell them I liked him. Besides, I had to leave in two weeks.

“They all look good, like Mia said.” I shrugged. “I’m sure you’ll pick a perfect one.”

Victoria didn’t say anything. She just stood there looking at me with the oddest look on her face. At one point her eyebrow went up for a few seconds then back down. I looked to Mia to see if she was watching Victoria too. Finally, she nodded, then walked over to Sophie and Amoeba where they were laying on the bed watching tv.

“Miss Sophie, you’re looking so much better already. I’ll be back to collect Amoeba in a little while. Mia, I’ll take the pup back with me so you can stay with Chloe. I have to make a few phone calls but I’ll be back in a bit. You let me know if you need anything.” Then she was gone.

“Mia, I don’t want you to stay here,” I turned to face her. “Your husband already had that bed brought in for me, and Sophie is doing better, thanks to her two wonderful doctors.”

“No, Chloe, I’ll stay with you. I wasn’t there for you before, so I want to now,” Mia said.

“You will not,” I sweetly demanded. “I need you to stay with her while I get a quick shower and change into some comfy sweats, but then you’re going home. Besides, I’ll need you tomorrow when we get answers to all this. Nothing is going to happen overnight, and if it does, you’re a ten-minute car ride away.”

“I agree with your little sister. You’ll just be uncomfortable here,” Parker said from the doorway. “That being said, Chloe, her bloodwork came back, and we’re looking at an infection somewhere. Trey and I spoke, and I’m starting her on a different antibiotic. She should be comfortable overnight, so get some sleep.”

“Thank you, Parker,” I said. “If you give me ten minutes of Mia’s time, I’ll shove her out the door with you.”

“I have a better idea. Why doesn’t Mia go home with Parker now and I’ll entertain my little patient while Chloe gets a shower,” Trey said from just behind Parker.

Chapter 41

Trey

“Dr. Trey, I hoped you would come back. Want to play with me?” Sophie asked from under the covers.

“Of course I’ll play with you. I also brought you a popsicle.” I walked over to Sophie.

“Mummy, can I have icy-pole from Dr. Trey?” Sophie begged. “I was a good girl all day.”

“Please Mummy. Don’t make me eat both popsicles all by myself,” I now begged from next to Sophie. “Please.”

“Oh brother. Literally,” Parker said. “I never know what’s next with you.”
