The door opened about an hour later. Sophie was still playing on the floor.

“How are my two girls this morning?” Trey asked, overly cheerful. “Hey, Mom, I didn’t know you would be here this morning. You should have told me. We could have had breakfast and went over the files you wanted me to look at.”

“I’m sorry, I hadn’t necessarily planned to come by, but Mia was busy this morning so I offered to bring Chloe some breakfast,” Victoria said. “We can have lunch if you’re free?”

Trey looked like he wanted to ask questions of his mother, but not in front of me.

“Did you mean these files?” I asked with what he liked to call my adorable scrunched-up nose.

A silly grin spread across his face. He walked over with Sophie’s chart in his hand and sat on the floor next to Sophie and her mates.

“Miss Sophie, how are you and your friends feeling this morning?” Trey asked, shaking bunny’s and both teddy’s hands. “If it’s okay with you, I would like to listen to your lungs.”

I’d relaxed maybe a little too much, ever since Parker let us know that the heart valve was doing well, and that she most likely picked up an infection in her travels to the States or from her last hospital stay. Hearing Trey say he wanted to listen to her lungs had me up in a second, standing next to Sophie as Trey leaned over, laying his stethoscope on her chest.

“My goodness, Sophie. What did you eat for breakfast this morning, because I hear birds chirping in there,” Trey said, pointing to her chest.

“No, Dr. Trey, the birds are chirping outside, not in my body,” Sophie said, laughing. “I had a moo juice though. Do you hear a moo in there?”

“I don’t know which one of you is sillier and which one of you is the kid and which is the grown-up,” Parker said, standing in the doorway. “Good morning, everyone. Did Trey fill you in on her X-ray results?”

“No, little brother, I was just getting to that.” Trey leaned back against the wall from his seated position on the floor. “Go right ahead and fill them in. I’ll be here having a tea party with Sophie.”

Parker walked over to Chloe and Victoria. “Sophie’s X-ray is indicating a mild case of walking pneumonia. Her fever showed before the congestion, but it explains the shortness of breath, low oxygen, and fatigue. The antibiotic she’s on will take care of any secondary infections.”

Trey had pushed himself up off the floor to join the grown-ups when Sophie got excited aboutDora the Exploreron the television.

“I’ll take it from there, Parker. I’m going to keep her in the hospital for at least another twenty-four hours so we can keep the medication going through IV.” His explanation was interrupted when the intercom called for Dr. Hawthorne to Labor and Delivery, stat.

“Sounds like that’s for me,” Trey said, already making his way to the door. “I’ll stop back in later today to see how things are going.”

Chapter 43

Trey

Istood just outside of Sophie’s room, peeking through a small opening. Mia, Chloe, and Sophie sat on the bed playing Go Fish. Bunny and teddy were tucked under the covers taking a nap. It was surprising to me how much Chloe had fit right in with our family. I was going to miss her and Sophie. I was just watching and thinking until someone pushed me from behind.

“I’m not sure what I should think of a doctor that just peeks in a patient’s room.” Betty waved her hands at me to move aside. “I need to get in there to get Sophie’s morning vitals before her doctor demands them.”

“You’re so bossy. Who can I report you to?” I joked, then stepped aside.

Sophie looked up in time to catch sight of me hovering at the door.

“See what you did now?” I scolded Betty.

Sophie cheered. “Dr. Trey is here, Mummy. Maybe I can leave now. Dr Trey, can I leave now? I feel all better, I promise.”

“Well, I do believe you look much better, and the nurses tell me your fever was gone all night.” I spoke to her directly, taking several looks in Chloe’s direction with a smile. “I think I want you to stay one more day or maybe two, just to make sure, though. We can’t have you sick traveling all the way back to Sydney.”

“Yes, but…,”Sophie started.

“Let me finish, cutie. You don’t even know what I was going to say.” I stepped closer, then lost my train of thought when Chloe turned her gaze directly at me. I found her charming and refreshing, but I had to push those thoughts aside because she would be leaving soon.

“I wanna…,” Sophie started.

I held up my hand. “Wait, wait, wait,” I said on a laugh. “You need to stay at least one more day, doctor’s orders, but I have an idea you might like. You want to hear it?”

Sophie climbed under the covers with her teddies and bunny hiding her face. Mia lay back on the pillow with Sophie making silly noises under the blanket, until they were both laughing.
