“Okay, I guess one of the other sick kids wants to go with me to see all the new babies upstairs,” I looked to Chloe, putting my finger to my lips. “I’ll see you guys later because after that, I was gonna go have McDonald’s for lunch.” I quickly walked to the door, opened it, then shut it and leaned against it, still in the room, waiting for Sophie’s response.

“I want to go, Mummy, I want to go. I love Macca’s,” Sophie cried. “Tell Dr. Trey I want to go, Aunt Mia.”

“I’m not sure you deserve to go after that performance,” Chloe scolded.

Chloe looked to me with a smile. “Dr. Trey, don’t they only let good little girls go upstairs to see the babies?”

“I’m a good girl, Mummy.” Sophie threw the covers off and stood on the bed, pulling her IV line. “Oh no, I hurt my rope.”

I laid her chart on the bed to look at her IV. “Let me see what happened. It looks alright, you just pulled it.”

“Can I go with you now, Dr. Trey?” Sophie asked politely.

“Are you going to apologize for being crook?” Chloe asked with her arms crossed. “That was bad on ya’.”

Chloe was scolding her daughter and all I wanted to do was smile. She was even more adorable when she was upset, but I didn’t want to let Sophie see me smiling.

“I’m going to step outside for a minute while you two discuss this.” I walked to the door and exited to the hallway, leaving the door slightly open.

“Why do you look like you did something?” Betty stopped walking.

“I feel bad. I was joking with Sophie but got her in trouble.” I shrugged. “Now what do I do?”

“You’re such a softie with the kids.” Betty patted my face then listened at the door. “Doesn’t sound like anyone is upset in there.”

I listened at the opening and waited until I heard Chloe say she could go. Then I stepped from behind the door with an empty wheelchair.

“I’m looking for Princess Sophie. Her royal carriage awaits,” I announced with a bow.

“Dr. Trey, I’m sorry I was crook. Can I go see the little babies now?” Sophie asked, squeezing teddy and bunny tightly. “First, I need to use the dunny.”

“Go on. Go to the dunny, then we’ll go,” Trey said. “Mia and Chloe, would you like to come as well? A set of twins were born this morning.”

“Twins? Girls or boys, or one each?” Chloe asked.

“Girls, and they are identical.” I smiled widely. “It’s always amazing to me.”

“I’ve never seen identical twin babies in person. Perhaps I’ll join you.” Chloe turned to Mia. “You coming?”

“I’m meeting Parker for lunch today. Although Macca’s does sound yummy, I’ll pass on going so I can see my husband,” Mia said. “I’ll bring some games to play later on this afternoon. Does that sound good, Sophie?”

Sophie jumped into the wheelchair and nodded.

The nursery windowswere lined with people pointing and waving. I helped Sophie stand up in the wheelchair and gestured for Chloe to come stand in front of me. Chloe tentatively slid in between the wheelchair and me and sidled up next to Sophie.

“Mummy, those babies look the same. Why do they look the same?” Sophie pulled on Chloe’s sleeve and exposed her neck all the way to the shoulder.

I tried my best to not stare at the bare, creamy white skin begging to be kissed. Thankfully, a parent of one of the babies spoke to me from the opposite side, startling me out of the impulse.

Chapter 44

Chloe

Iturned my attention on Sophie and her questions with half an ear listening to Trey speak with a grandparent about one of the babies.

“Those babies look alike because they’re twins. That means their mummy had two babies at the same time.” I pointed to the twins.
